General education requirements are often attacked or painted as pointless extra classes people have to take. But they have real value for both individual people and society at large! My favorite co-author, Liz Ziff, and I argue in our latest OpEd, out now in Times Higher Education, that faculty have an obligation to protect gen eds timeshighereducation.com/blog/

> William James said that an educated person knows a good man when he sees one. There are standards and a style for every type of activity — manual, athletic, intellectual, or artistic; and the educated man should be one who can tell sound from shoddy work in a field outside his own. General education is especially required in a democracy..

How much waste could have been avoided with these ideas?

Haven’t had the time to do an here yet, so here goes: working as an admin at the moment. I’m chiefly interested in the ‘why’ of education, and how it gets instantiated (or not) in . I’d love to hear about schools with distinctive missions and how their gen Ed requirements reflect those missions. Also, for my European colleagues: do your units have mission / vision / values statements?I s there any talk of purpose beyond research and/or career?

> .. everyone can experience the satisfaction that comes with creative design.. program design—but not —deserves the same role in a education as mathematics and language skills.
> A student of design who never touches a program again will still pick up universally useful problem-solving skills, experience a deeply creative activity, and learn to appreciate a new form of aesthetic.

> This book is the first book on as the core subject of a . Its main focus is the design process that leads from problem statements to well-organized solutions.. Our desire to focus on the design process requires two radical innovations for introductory courses. The first innovation is a set of explicit design guidelines.. The second innovation is a radically new ..

@temsit 上田紀行の考え方と1935のバートランド ラッセルの考えかたの共通点があろと思います。後でまた、 Harvard の 「General Education in a Free Society」 のリンクを探します。
> Education, moreover, teaches people that the way to find out things is to look them up in books, not to observe them in the actual world.

> ... the elegance of a good program is comparable to time-tested poems or the black-and-white photographs of a bygone era. In short, programming differs from good programming like crayon sketches in a diner from oil paintings in a museum.
