Sad to hear of Ian Wilmut passing away. Here he is back in 2016, talking during the Festival with Jim Al-Khalili for a recording of The Life Scientific flickr.com/photos/woolamaloo_g

New analysis suggests nearly died out
Study claims 99% of human ancestors died off 930,000 years ago. During this time, the effective population sizeโ€”a measure of the individuals who contributed to maintaining the populationโ€”was only about 1,300 individuals. It's a very small population, and would have left our ancestors at risk of extinction. We'd certainly put an equivalent-sized population on the list today. arstechnica.com/science/2023/0

"The new technology of ancient DNA has highlighted a remarkable parallel in the prehistory of Europe and South Asia. In both cases, the arrival of agriculture from southwest Asia after 9,000 years ago catalyzed profound population mixtures of groups related to Southwest Asian farmers and local hunter-gatherers." youtu.be/pra7YZWVc-s @science

"A genomics analysis of more than 3,000 living people suggested that our ancestorsโ€™ total population plummeted to about 1,280 breeding individuals for about 117,000 years. Scientists believe that an extreme climate event could have led to the bottleneck that came close to wiping out our ancestral line." theguardian.com/science/2023/a @science

A recent study did show
That higher ed acted like a shield, so
Protection it affords

A team of scientists say they've found evidence that early human ancestors went through a "prolonged, severe bottleneck" in which ~1,280 individuals capable of reproducing were able to sustain a population for about 117,000 years.

A global population maintained by only 1280 people? That's the size of a slightly larger-than-average high school. It's mind-boggling that they managed not to die out over 117,000 years.

The origin of the Indo-European languages has been a mystery for over two centuries. A new study combines linguistics and genetics to propose a hybrid hypothesis that challenges the previous theories. The study suggests that the Indo-European family emerged from the northern arc of the Fertile Crescent around 8100 years ago and diversified into five main branches.

Genetic bottleneck question ---

Out of curiosity: There is this new Science paper (link below) using genetic techniques to figure out that about a million years ago there was "... a reduction in the population size of our ancestors from about 100,000 to about 1000 individuals, which persisted for about 100,000 years."

Are there any experts out there who can explain to me why this is plausible? Around 1000 people roughly constant for 100,000 years?
