The original meaning of 'genocide' developed by Lemkin was much wider than the one that was later enshrined in the #GenocideConvention - for Lemkin genocide included all policies aimed at the destruction of a social group (e.g. also denial of education in the mother tongue, firing of teachers, prohibition of religious expressions etc). Today is International Genocide Commemoration Day, where we remember the victims of past genocides and make it our mission to prevent future genocides.

The term 'genocide' literally means "killing of a people" and was coined by the Polish lawyer Raphael Lemkin, who was also the driving force behind the adoption of the 1948 Genocide Convention.
