If we (USA & other countries) want a robust posture to promptly detect new pandemics we need to foster participatory genomic surveillance. As in, be able to report back a metagenomic result to a customer, identifying the virus/ viruses that may have caused their “cold” or “flu.” So, a CLIA license for **this market** should be less about calibrated thermometer records & more about accurate data sharing & faithful chain-of-custody.

Imagine a world where microscopes and telescopes were illegal unless you had a medical or astronomy license, respectively. I mean WTF. But that’s EXACTLY what genomic sequencing is being treated like for using this tech to determine the causes of your routine colds and flus 🧬

There’s a need for a CLIA lab supported service that lets people take ownership of their infection history. Like Leewnhoek’s 1st microscope & pond water, sequencing allows us to “see” what’s causing our cough/sore throat.
