My wife is in , eating good food and talking to other while I am here having to work. Tomorrow she is going to while I am commuting to the office. I'm jealous as heck, but more than that I am so proud of all of her hard work to get to where she is now.

So have already had interesting convos today about singing (see link for example), Guano Islands Act, and am pondering scientists propensity to use all their senses ( lick rocks; keep lists of phyla they have eaten; test drugs on themselves; what do do?

During her lifetime she was barred from even attending meetings of the Geological Society of London (let alone applying for membership) because of her sex & many wealthy "paleontologists" published claims of discovery based on having purchased fossils from Anning & other fossil hunters (neglecting to mention Anning's name or contribution). Nonetheless, many contemporary & became so impressed with her knowledge that they would visit her to consult on the anatomy &

@suw you might want to ask Earth scientists as well, or does is specifically have to be ecologists?

I've a question for and anyone else who might know: what is the term for the process that causes rocks to come up into newly tilled soil, say, in a field? Every year, even though each spring all the existing rocks are removed? It reminds me of capillary action, but I think that pertains to liquids, not solids. A 2nd question is, are the rocks pulled? pushed? or drawn upward by the condition of less pressure? And if it's that, why does rock move to less pressure?

Question of the day: Why do expect to see increasing chloride content in surface waters around pending magmatic . I did not immediately know the answer to this.

The average chlorine content of basalts is only 0.014%.

A large fraction occurs in hydroxyl minerals such as biotite and hornblende; These minerals may contain several tenths of a per cent of chlorine. Some chlorine is also present as chloride in liquid (aqueous) inclusions.

Chlorine does not show any marked trend in the differentiation of the common igneous rocks. Since it is an element of well-developed atmophilic and hydrophilic characteristics, a general lack of correlation between chlorine and the major and minor constituents of rocks is not unexpected; an appreciable, perhaps large, fraction of the chlorine in a magma escapes on crystallization.

Few elements (compared to chlorine) have siderophilic, lithophilic, hydrophilic, and atmophilic properties all developed in comparable degree.

I remember when we just called them ROCKS, and now they all have fancy names, 😎
"Geology On"
Geology N Roll"
And the famous geologist Joni Mitchell once said. "I've looked at rocks from both sides now, from up and down and still somehow,.... I really don't know at all ♪

I wonder who I could ask about these strange rocks I've been finding? Anyone? 🤔 Goood morning @Judeet88
What am I looking at? Any Idea?..
Don't say Rocks, I already got that far 😂

Do any / Western US have thoughts about how relevant are the older editions of the Roadside Geology series from the late 1970s/1980s? A big book sale fundraiser is going on this week in town and they have a bunch for $2 each ($1 each if still left tomorrow)

We have a recent Washington book, and an old Oregon one. My 4yo really loved us reading aloud from it on our Oregon coast road trip this summer, but it seemed a bit dated (I have never formally studied )

Once landed on the , wanted . Such samples needed to be kept , both from the atmosphere aboard the or or , and the keep the safe from any unknown or unknowable in them. So the samples were stored in containers and remain sealed until they are studied. Apollo confirmed what most already believed though: The Moon is dead. There are no pathogens there.
