"Tonga volcano triggered seafloor debris stampede"

"Last year's Tonga volcanic eruption produced the fastest underwater flows ever recorded, scientists say.

Huge volumes of rock, ash and mud were clocked moving across the ocean floor at speeds of up to 122km/h (75mph)."

This Monday was particularly Monday-ish, so choosing to transport myself instead to Eigg and the beautiful weirdness of An Sgùrr, viewed here end on.

TIL 'inselberg': an isolated rock, rising abruptly out of the surrounding landscape. A loan-word from German - an 'island mountain'.

For the theme “lyrical” I’m going with the use of imagination & analogy in the exploration & communication of science through thought-experiments like Lyell’s Amphibious Being! In geologist Charles Lyell (1797-1875)’s famous ‘Principles of Geology,’ he wrote that to avoid some sources of prejudice in understanding would require an Amphibious Being, 🧵1/n

Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc · Monts d’Ardèche · France

This summit is an extinct cone standing out a plateau. Here’s also where the arises, France’s longest river. It is a pleasure to climb the last 200 meters to the summit, as every footstep sounds a bit. The name of the rock, , has its origin in the bright sound it gives when hit. The photo was taken about 5 yrs back.

Interesting in a roughly stacked

ok i was thinking about related topic the other day. the mantle is ~4000/2/3 =700 times the volume of earths oceans. mantle minerals ought to be able to incorporate water to make new minerals.

why is there an ocean at all?

its existence seems prearious.

did rock suck up the oceans on mars and venus or did they loose oceans to photolysis of H2O or both?

Are the oceans leaky bathtubs? is partially responsible! 20% of the ocean's water may lave drained into the deep mantle over the last billion years.*

Don't blame Canada! The Cascade subduction zone is too warm.
