@Anthro or fake everyone with a miniature hammer... Wow look at that giant trilobite!! #geology #geologyhumor
@Anthro #geology #geologyhumor by far the most photographed item of a geologist: the hammer!
The local rock hounds group always need help identifying their finds…which are 9x out 10 some agate/chert/chalcedony thing.
I got some muriatic acid from the bricklayers that rebuilt my chimney last fall, and diluted it this morning and put in eye dropper bottles to give out to a lucky dozen of them.
No more mistaking carbonates from siliceous rocks on my watch.

For this Valentine's Day...I offer nature's expression of attraction...a melding of #ejecta, the lingering heat of placement, and mechanical comingling...the #Agglomerate.
Conglomerate and agglomerate are synonyms, except when used as business and geological terms. For geology, an agglomerate is "a mass of angular volcanic fragments united by heat".
In this case, the slug of molten material gathers angular blocks and bombs as it is carried downslope or along the top/sides of molten lava flows. This comingling and agglomeration is likened to the gathering of snow crystals as snowballs are formed.
You might say the heat and attraction and falling/rolling comingling are the closest to passion that is expressed in rocks....rocks falling into permanent embrace.

Non-zero but very low chance of a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Northern California today.
As long as we are making disclosures today.

I usually like my #coffee in the solid basalt range…but #today, it is like a pyroxenite with accessory chromite.
If that makes sense to you, you may be a #geologist. For the rest, let’s just say…it’s dark, heavy and full of #mineral goodness.

Oddly, the Red Shirters (typically the attire of the expendable geologist/mission specialists) seem the least interested.
Probably thinking “Look at the Vulcan…bet you a Romulan Ale he’s going to tell us how to do geology”.
Engineers always more valued than the lowly expendable Mission Specialist/Geologists which were somehow in never ending supply onboard the USS Enterprise.
Makes me wonder if there was a special section of the ship that was the lair of the geologists…maybe a windowless alcove in the bowels of the Enterprise, where an old petrographic microscope and X-ray diffraction rests among boxes and boxes of rocks collected from #WhereNoManHasGoneBefore and a rack of #RedShirts

How many pounds of rocks do you have stored in the basement?
And that’s a joke only 0.00001% of the world gets!

Every time a post related to #Geology offers the TRANSLATE to English option…even though written in English…a doctoral candidate somewhere gets their dissertation approved.

A marine annelid has left its trace
Upon sand, in time and place
A myriad of paths, turns and twists
In search of food, making grist
Leaving a mark on their hunting grounds
For future observers to see their rounds
Taking advantage of a friendly lamination
To exercise their personal bioturbation

I see a granular-appearing rock outcrop of indeterminate classification, which both intrigues and concerns me.
On Indonesian island, so, volcanic likely…yellow color and near surface water which screams palagonitization of ejecta to me.
