Does anyone have an idea of what is that strange piece of rock, founded in the garrigues north of Montpellier. There the rocks are mostly limestone, and that one is the only one I founded.

My lunch stop today was Battery Hill, which turns out to be some columnar basalt. This was formed from slowly cooling lava, this formation is around 35 million years old.

A rare insight into the work and opinions of one of the great 19th century engineers, published in1825!
Full of seemingly apparent contradictions resulting from uncertainties in a time of profound technological change.
Even better, as its in the public domain you can download a copy free of charge!

Great Tor is one my of favourite landmarks on Gower in Wales as it clearly shows the uplifted rocks - the parallel lines of rock that once lay flat until they were buckled by movement.

Teaching and educating can be fun and rewarding, and today it was my favourite class of the year.
#UNSW #GEOS1211 Earth and Environmental Science students took part in 'The Sandstone City' field class. An exploration of the Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone, how it formed, and why it makes such a great building and decorative stone.
Thanks to my fellow educators Dr Indrani Mukherjee and Di Li Qian.

When you're such a fan (alluvial) of that ol' time rock and roll
For #MeteoriteMonday, I present this fresh example of the Oum Dreyga meteorite.
On October 16, 2003, Moroccan soldiers witnessed a fireball over the Western Sahara. They recovered #meteorites from the fall, which were analyzed and classified as H3-5 chondrites.
Example shown weighs 11 grams and is from the Galactic Stone & Ironworks Collection. Not for sale.

Who's got the best interpretation of all that's going on here, then? General environment: deep slate mine, north Wales.
Dalradian Supergroup formation between Cruden Bay and Collieston. Glove included for scale.

For #MeteoriteMonday and #MineralMonday, I present the NWA 11273 #meteorite.
NWA 11273 is a lunar feldspathic breccia that was blasted off the surface of the #Moon by an ancient asteroid impact.
The ejected material then fell to Earth as #meteorites. Nomads in the Algerian Sahara recovered the meteorites, which were then analyzed by scientists at the University of Washington.

For #MeteoriteMonday, this is the #Imilac pallasite.
Imilac #meteorites were first recovered out of Chile's Atacama Desert in 1822. It is a #pallasite type of meteorite that represents the core/mantle boundary of a large asteroid.
Specimen shown is a polished slice from the Galactic Stone & Ironworks Collection. Not for sale.

For #MeteoriteMonday, I present the NWA 791 #meteorite.
NWA 791 is a L5 chondrite recovered out of the Moroccan Sahara in 2001.
The NASA Ames Vertical Gun research team used this meteorite as a test target for high speed projectiles to better understand the impact dynamics of asteroid-like materials.
This specimen is a 9-gram slice that resides in the Galactic Stone & Ironworks collection.

In this case, it's "meteorwrongs".
I wish I had a shiny nickel for every slag and terrestrial breccia I have seen offered for sale as "meteorites".
I would have $420 even.

For #ThinSectionThursday, I present the NWA 4910 #meteorite, also known as the "Begaa" meteorite.
This meteorite was recovered from the Sahara near Begaa Morocco in 1999. It was analyzed and officially classified as a LL3.1 chondrite. It is rich in chondrules of all types.

What is it?
Or, I guess I should say What are they?
Clues : they are meteorite-related and extremely rare. Not only is the type of specimen very rare, but the material itself is quite rare.
So, to recap : a rare form of a rare type of meteorite-related material.
I will post the answer later this week after they arrive in the mail.

๐ชจโ Okay #GeologistsOfTwitter, what is this? It looks like a glassy obsidian that has morphed into a turquoise-colored mineral. I find it in ground-up asphalt dropped and flattened over paths to create backcountry roads in Colorado.
