Just read the specs and a Chris Holmes' blog post on #geoparquet. A few years ago we were choosing the best geo-column format for processing in Parquet files, and found WKB the fastest one (compared to WKT and lon,lat columns). Turns out, we were making a GeoParquet database without knowing it!

@underdarkGIS not in GeoDataViewer. This extension uses only JS libraries and I don't plan on adding Python dependency or geopandas support.

However, I might add #geoParquet data loading later this year for large spatial datasets.

@wnd I ended up mamba installing:
- libgdal-arrow-parquet
- pyarrow

The speedup for writing and the disk space saved is pretty neat. I've tested with point and line geometries so far

you can't possibly expect shp to get any update considering that the last esri docs dates back to the 90s, it's time we all move on to #geopackage or better #geoparquet. I know it's difficult, my current client works with #mapinfo mif/mid, when he told me that req it was like asking me for a lotus 123 spreadsheet instead of a csv

I still miss some #NetCDF #zarr #GeoTIFF #COG #geoparquet #HDF5 #OGC #geospatial people.
