“Based on the experience of my life, which I have not exactly hit out of the park, I tend to agree with that thing about, If it's not broke, don't fix it. And would go even further to: Even if it is broke, leave it alone, you'll probably make it worse.” — George Saunders — — — #GeorgeSaunders #quote #quotes #fix #broke #wellenough #broken #worsen #maintenance

My #ShortStory for March #FuriousFiction is written, proofread/edited and submitted. And the American writer and editing evangelist #GeorgeSaunders would be proud of me: I spent the afternoon editing my story, and I still changed two words before clicking Submit! ✍

Just had the spine-tingling feeling I get when I've written the last line of the penultimate draft of my #FuriousFiction. Now, it's pure proofreading and editing. Because as #GeorgeSaunders says, "With diligent editing, you turn it into something better." ✍️

Hoy, en #BoyWithLetters, aprovechando lo que preparé para la última sesión del club de lectura os hablo sobre la extraordinaria 'Lincoln en el bardo', una novela de lo más peculiar en su estructura formal escrita por George Saunders👻

@KimSchebler Just started it too. The first chapter's pace really gripped me. Imaginary take on familiar, eternal human themes. Let's see what chapter two brings...

Really enjoying George Saunders’s Liberation Day as my first read of the New Year. #GeorgeSaunders #LiberationDay

Such a great essay by George Saunders about evolving as a writer (and a reader). Buried in the middle is a discussion about becoming a better writer by reading bad writing that I appreciated. https://open.substack.com/pub/georgesaunders/p/office-hours-3d9?utm_source=direct&r=5hxlm&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

"Night was falling. Birds were singing. Birds were, it occurred to me to say, enacting a frantic celebration of day’s end."

In a post-democratic America, the characters in Saunders’s story collection “Liberation Day” are waiting for the end. But what if it never comes?

George Saunders on the role of editing in his work and potentially yours, which he describes as "freakification":
“What if we understood ‘editing’ not to be “correcting” but ‘revealing’ – revealing a new voice. And not a voice that we are ‘aiming for’ or that ‘sounds like us,’ in which we ‘tell our truths,’ but just one that is more interesting? Harder to ignore?" 1/2

@Abibliophobia @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon Me too - I got a present of #GeorgeSaunders' #ASwimInAPondInTheRain, took a look at the first pages and knew I could never read that #squinchy little print, so I gave it to a keen-sighted friend and bought the #ebook for myself

Maybe my favourite ever passage from a book on writing:
"So, this isn’t graceless writing; this is a great writer writing a graceless writer writing. (And not only that: it’s a great writer writing a graceless writer writing about a world in which a severed nose winds up in a loaf of bread.)"
This being from George Saunders' "A Swim in a Pond in the Rain," talking about Gogol's "The Nose."
Saunders' book is one of the best books of instruction for writers of short fiction that I've ever encountered. It's deep (I've been working through it slowly, a chapter at a time) but practical and rewarding.
(The Saunders book isn't focused on specfic but still works for it superlatively, IMO. But if short specfic is your thing, I think Ben Bova's "The Craft of Writing Science Fiction That Sells" does something similar & is a way underrated writing text for its clarity and practicality.) #WritingCommunity #WritingShortStories #ShortStories #GeorgeSaunders

Currently reading #LiberationDay by #GeorgeSaunders.
#Saunders is my favorite living writer, the winner of not only the 2017 #ManBookerPrize, but also a #MacArthur #GeniusGrant. If you haven't read anything by him yet, I recommend starting with the hilarious but acerbic short story #SeaOak, or the much gentler #Fox8.
