@britishcomposers @classicalmusic "Voices from things growing in a churchyard" from his song cycle "By Footpath & Stile" sadly a very direct experience of death; all 3 of his older brothers died before he was an adult. songwhip.com/finziquartet/by-f

@classicalmusic @britishcomposers As I am sure you all know that today (1st Dec) is "National Eat a Red Apple Day". So not trying too hard to create a link, it's worth pointing out that Finzi devoted himself to composing and apple-growing, saving a number of rare English apple varieties from extinction. So what is it that apples need to thrive - well "Earth and Air and Rain" and here it is songwhip.com/roderick-williams

Reading: LARK RISE, by , in a winsome blue cloth-bound edition released earlier this year by publishers.

“After her husband died, she went away to live with her eldest son, and the round house shared the fate of Sally's. Where it stood is now a ploughed field. The husband's sacrifices, the wife's romance, are as though they had never been - 'melted into air, into thin air.”
