16 years after the murder of Thomas Becket, #GeraldOfWales argued that, if Irish clergy had ever *really* preached to the Irish people, there should be Irish martyrs.
(The poor state of Christianity in Ireland was one ground for the "Norman Invasion".)
Maurice, archbishop of Cashel, put him down sharply with a reference to (probably) Becket: "there is now come into our land a people who know how to make martyrs, and have frequently done it."
