Fascist city sculptures and pavements-built-upon-pavements further exacerbated the feeling of claustrophobic urban landscape, incomplete development, and oppressive regimes in , while ’s own appearance and armour design became more art deco. The film, perhaps like no other, demonstrates Burton’s influences rooted in : in addition to , in Batman Returns it’s easy to see the likes of and in the aesthetic.

While 1989's Batman was impressive, was stunning , often shot with a wintery blue tint and entirely inside an elaborate, deliberately crowded Warner Brothers studio that Pfeiffer herself apparently at one point got lost in, with its temperature dropped to subzero for the lead villain’s live penguins and for visible breaths in the air; crew members stepped from sets full of real snow and ice out into sunny Californian streets, still wearing their parkas.

Sometimes my breath is taken away by the economy of line & colour that an artist can use in a sketch to suggest (capture) their subject...

This morning, I came across this sketch (form his seventh sketchbook) which stopped me turning the page for some time... enjoy.

Kandinsky had a spiritual relationship with music, believing it could reveal the route to a new art that shed material appearances in favor of an inner reality. But which music guided his pursuit of an art that reveals a mystical, inner truth? hyperallergic.com/731339/on-ka

Joe May’s 1929 German silent film Asphalt, both the last gasp of German Expressionism and the first step on the road to film noir. A young cop is seduced into a noir nightmare world by a sexy jewel thief femme fatale.

Betty Amann's performance is a highlight.

Not pure noir but noirish.

“The ugly, the strange, and the gruesome.” This persistent undercurrent in German art of the early 20th century is explored in a LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art exhibition with works that reflect the Weimar years... and war. hyperallergic.com/798511/war-b

Well, 30 years ago I was enjoying on VHS tape that I got for the holidays. After being presented with the difficult task of introducing this subject matter from to screen, had used creative freedom gained from the first film's success to embrace and include interesting themes of , , , and . And then, sadly, it was all gone - due in large part to that very corporatism. And yet, all these years later (and having paved a way for the ), it finally receives the credit it deserves. I wrote about it all a few years ago here: mediaactivist.com/2012/08/14/b
