In Germany we don't say "Reserved". We say:

'Parktaschenmarkierung beachten!"

Unberechtigt abgestelle Fahrzeuge werden kostenpflichtig abgeschleppt!

EN: Be mindful of parking lot markings. Unauthorized parking is prohibited and unauthorized
vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Learning German can be tough with its complex grammar, pronunciation, and word order. Noun cases, genders, and verb conjugations can overwhelm learners. Pronunciation has unique sounds and intonation patterns. Word order differs from English, demanding careful attention. But with dedication, practice, and immersion, success in mastering German is possible!

Fun fact about pronunciation that I became aware of last year:

While the CH in "ich" usually makes the sound represented by [ç] in the IPA, at least in High German, there are exceptions in casual speech.

When we speak so quickly or lazily that we essentially skip the I altogether, the CH that remains as the sole representation of that "ich" may transform into a more sibilant [ɕ]. (Which is, incidentally, the sound written as X in Pinyin.)

I'm not sure if this happens because it would feel weird to make a [ç] sound directly after a consonant in phrases like "wenn ich" turned "wenn'ch", or if it's more that we're still trying to imply the presence of an I somehow. That would also make sense, since widening the mouth as if to say a German I and then not actually doing it would have that effect.

It's fun to play around with, if you want to try it out. Widen the mouth, give it more of a hissing quality. Pronouncing the full word that way, I included, sounds "childlike" to my ears because young children sometimes struggle with the proper [ç], but when I'm skipping the I, the hissing *must* intensify to make up for it. :D

Many German students struggle to understand where to place words in a sentence. In this blog post, I explain German syntax rules in both main and subordinate clauses and provide plenty of examples.

Today I realized of a parallelism between German and English. The verbs “to like” in English and „mögen” in German both mean “to enjoy”, and they share a root with “likely” and „möglich” (“possible”) respectively.

“Likely” is not exactly the same as “possible”, nonetheless, they are both degrees of certainty. And why do they share root with something so unrelated as ”enjoying”?

My 7yr old daughter keeps correcting my and pronunciation, which is great!

But now she’s “ashamed” that her dad speaks broken german in front of her friends and teachers.

And I totally understand.

My motivation to learn has dramatically changed: before, I was learning to integrate better into German society. Now I do it for the kids, and needs to go faster, more dedicated studying

@elisecutts Right, and don't get me started with pastries. I called these things Pfannkuchen for years, yet everyone outside Berlin calls them "Berliners". :blobsweats:
