ought to be better known in English. Denis Jackson completed six books of translations. The Dykemaster, 1888, is among the best: a powerful exploration of the struggle for small acts of progress in a socially rigid and superstitious community. The Dykemaster reminds me of (who after all is a bit German). In its mystery and clarity it recalls a v different tale, Silas Marner. yet? No. BUT SOON.

Today I'm trawling through the stats of the PT collection (Germanic language literature) to see what we need to keep. It's surprising what people check out a lot (we have a lot of Schiller fans here) & am gratified to see that some of my favs are doing well (yay for Vicki Baum's classic, Grand Hotel).

That said...there's a lot of stuff that has never checked out. There's a lot of old faculty donation dross in here.

I’m thoroughly enjoying one of my slow reads „Before the Storm“ by Theodor Fontane. It’s about people living in Berlin and in villages around it and the general vibe of the Winter of 1812/13: Before the Storm of well vanquishing the little general. Kind of makes me want reread War and Peace. If you know of other novels that take place around this time let me know!
