Jesus: You’ve been a bad boy, and your eternal punishment is watching the original Get Carter from 1971 in a loop.
Me: I guess things could have ended worse.

#HappyBirthday to Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, a.k.a. #MichaelCaine, the Oscar / BAFTA-winning English actor, born in London on this day. He has over 170 screen credits across eight decades and played, among others, Alfred Pennyworth, Fagin, Scrooge, "Sherlock Holmes" and Harry Palmer. Iconic as gangsters in #GetCarter ('71) and Neil Jordan's #MonaLisa ('86), but also memorable as the fracturing male leads of Brian De Palma's #DressedToKill ('80) and Oliver Stone's underrated #TheHand ('81). #OTD

Did you know that Harry Palmer and Jack Carter were played by the same Geezer?
Not a lot of people know that.

My son and I were admiring the music from “The Rest Of Us” game this morning. Great opportunity to play Roy Budd’s main theme from “Get Carter” for him, which has a similar vibe. He liked it! I tell you what, I’ll make that boy a Portishead fan yet!! Baby steps…..
Interestingly, Amazon Music’s “Get Carter” theme doesn’t have the train noises on it!

Get Carter (UK)
Jack Carter is a small-time hood working in London. When word reaches him of his brother's death, he travels to Newcastle to attend the funeral. Refusing to accept the police report of suicide, Carter seeks out his brother’s friends and acquaintances to learn who murdered his sibling and why.

Tonight's film:
#GetCarter (1971, dir. #MikeHodges, 112 min.), an all-time best UK film, wherein #MichaelCaine plays a London gangster gone north to investigate his brother's death, uncovering corruption crime & sleaze amid gritty evocative eerie 1970s Newcastle...just staggering

Director Mike Hodges made Get Carter, Croupier, and...Flash Gordon(!). One of these things is not like the other, but it sure makes a career interesting.
My tribute to him for @AwardsDaily@twitter.com

Yesterday I said that #GetCarter was repulsive in a strangely compelling way. I would contrast this with e.g. #NottingHill which is compelling in a strangely repulsive way.
The theme tune to #GetCarter is a sort of frozen tundra funk that sounds the chimes of doom.

Vale Mike Hodges, who cast John Osborne alongside Michael Caine in the kitchen-sink gangster film #GetCarter.
Sad to learn we lost Mike Hodges

There's a pivotal scene in Get Carter where Jack Carter sits in bed watching a porno and he's weeping because he's realised the reluctant girl in the film is his teenage niece. It drives him to seek revenge on the people involved.
Years ago when ITV showed this, they cut the porno footage (which showed no porn anyway) so all we got was Michael Caine crying as he looked at a flickering wall.
#GetCarter is a fantastic film.
