Over and over we get these wake up calls to stop doing life the way we have always done it. Stop with the extravagant vacations, flying anywhere we want anytime we think of it, stop the environmental abuse of clear cutting because the government allows it, making too much, doing too much, using too much..
The Burning Man thing is just a tiny subplot in the big picture of where humans started a neat little thing, then let it grow out of all proportion and sense. Cutting a few trees to build your own home then cleat cutting a mountainside to pad your bank account. Using a water source for your community then being compelled to sell millions of litres to bottled water companies to make share holders rich.
A huge city in the middle of the desert lit up all night so it shows from space. It would take days to list all the examples. The point is, it is long past time for humans to pull back and find ways to live with less energy.
We don't need all this huge extravagance to live full and satisfying lives. We need to see our grandchildren thrive. We need nature to flourish. We need hope for the future. This is all within our grasp if we knock off the bullshit. It starts with each one of us to stop waiting for the next guy to live with less and set good examples. And preaching to the choir on here as you all seem to understand and agree. But I guess we need to keep spreading the knowledge, ways and means.

The key to solid foundational preparedness is knowledge. Know your resources, know your area, know your allies, know your community. And most of all, know your own strengths and weaknesses. Develop your abilities and your awareness of what you have and what you need, what you might need in the future. Self reliance while being part of a strong community has always been the way to survive the starvation seasons, the wars, the disasters. But sometimes, that community is as much at risk and you are.
We rely on technology that in one massive error or failure could be gone for months, or ever. The knowledge to survive without electricity, central heating, internet based devices- this knowledge could save your life and your family.
It doesn't even have to be a disaster. It can be sudden job loss with no plan B. We are seeing it everywhere, 1000s and 1000s suddenly have no paycheck next month. How long before you are cancelling services, turning the heat down or off, rationing groceries. The more you know, the wider range of experiences you have, the better able you are to walk into an uncertain future.

Last year was a very cold wet spring that lasted into summer. Everyone struggled with their gardens, seeds wouldn't germinate and rotted, seedlings died. Everyone had to replant several times to get the garden going. Beekeepers were late getting their nucs out.
Then, the heat hit, but thankfully the extreme heat wasn't as long or as serious as summer 2021 where it hit 46C one day at my place, and 49.5C in the town that burned to the ground in BC.
There are so many issues related to weather. The coastal rain forest dries out. The infrastructure is damaged or destroyed. Floods, wildfires, mud and rock slides.. it challenges everyone. Wildlife, livestock, plant life- everything struggles.
This year is turning out to be a challenge for many all along the west coast. All we can do now is hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Not relying on old gardening models, putting into place structures to protect from too much rain and too much heat, better drainage, rain capture, fire mitigation- it feels overwhelming the amount there is to do. But doing things the way they've always been done is no longer working.

If ever there was a time to stock your vehicle with prep items, this is it. The terrible storms in upstate NY all the way to the awful bus crash in the interior of BC- people everywhere need help. If you are not capable or unprepared to help yourself, you sure can't help anyone else. The first travellers that came upon the bus crash were sheltering people in their cars. Having extra blankets, hand warmers, food, water, first aid supplies and extra clothing in your car can save lives. Diabetics might need food, people in shock need warmth and assurance (especially children), first aid is self explanatory. Having red flashers, reflective road triangles, or reflective tape that you can use in a pitch, all could prevent worsening conditions as more vehicles come up to the incident site. Doing what you can is doing a lot.

Here is a list of winter survival gear for travel in extreme cold. This list should be adjusted for your area or where you are travelling, you can pick from it what works for you. Assuming your car will work properly and always be warm, is the worst thing you can do. Accidents, break downs, road closures all can be lethal if you are not prepared. Remember, a car will get very cold very fast when not running. If you are idling for heat, remember to check exhaust for snow or ice build up. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer.
