L'enfer de l' #internationalisation, les pluriels... À par les fichiers #gettext rien ne semble correctement résoudre cette problématique et malheureusement, c'est peu présent dans les outils web

Now all I need is to check all the strings. And then convert all existing translations into https://github.com/vyskocilm/cnf-rs for #openSUSE
Today I am learning about #localisation and #internationalisation with #Python. For somebody who's never dug into #gettext etc before, I'm finding there are *very* few tutorials that start from scratch of "OK, here's how to start internationalising your strings, and then generating templates to be localised".
I found this one, https://phrase.com/blog/posts/translate-python-gnu-gettext/, which has gotten me off the ground, but gosh it was hard to find.

At first it didn't seem to work and raised OSError all the time, until I added fallback=True. Otherwise it won't use the default strings (English or "C" locale in this case).
Anybody know why the default locale in Linux is called "C"?
I've written my first localized in-house Python tool. Text is being translated by Python's gettext module and the utilities from Babel. You wrap all strings with the "magic function" _( ) which on runtime will look up a translated string instead of the original one. It feels like a big hack but works like a charm on Linux. On Windows you need to determine the language code yourself to initialise it. You can't use f-strings though. I had just grown used to them 😭
Nothing happened on the #MastodonMahout repository in quite a while. But I'm still working on it (an #accessibility centric #Mastodon #client), just differently at the moment.
To be able to offer translations of the #app, I rely on i18n-embed, a #rust crate that embeds the localisation resources directly into the app.
It supports both #gettext and #ProjectFluent syntax.

Rright, if you make every path dependent on the path the script is in - it would be helpful if you ALSO do this for the #translations. Or #gettext may be unhappy.
Ohmy. Problems one does not have if one does not #overengineer things. But where would be the fun in that? 😀

@ben_crowell_fullerton hello Ben. I would very much like to help with the translations of your books to any languages, especially French my mother tongue, as they are #oer. Maybe the tools #po4a & the #gettext tools can help. Another idea is to share them on #wikibooks & use them as références for courses on #wikiversity possibly, the #mastodonCommunity could help for technical bits. Hope to read you soon.

When building #multilingual #WordPress #plugins, I've always struggled with merging POT file changes into existing PO files non-destructively, without manually adding every new string.
I refuse to use #Poedit because its UI and terminology leaves me as confused as a frog in a spaceship.
Today I discovered #msgmerge (part of the BSD #gettext library, bundled in macOS). Works a treat alongside WP CLI.
> msgmerge -vU dest.po src.pot

Do you have merge failures with #weblate and you are using #gettext po files? Have a look at this script: https://pagure.io/fedora-docs/translations-scripts/blob/master/f/solve_weblate_merge_failures.sh
It does it automatically for you :)
The only specific code you may have to change is the pot template link.
This also is a demonstration on why using standards internationalization is a good thing.
I think we should be able to get the URLs from the weblate api. Cc @nijel
Dear LazyFedi, what's the C/GLib/Vala equivalent of Python's `gettext.translation(languages='…')` call?
If my login session's locale and hence my app's UI using say `en.AU`, but my app needs a string translated as say `en.US` (or whatever), how do I do that?
