In 2015 David Cameron effectively banned onshore wind. Last year Ukraine built more onshore wind than we did, in spite of having a smaller population and being in the middle of a major war. Since 2015, 20 turbines have gained planning permission, 5% of the number granted in the previous 5 years.

Onshore wind is one of the cheapest forms of energy, and one of the cleanest. Also, once agreed, it can be deployed relatively quickly.

Last year the government promised to repeal the ban. Since then that promise has been watered down to suit climate delayer back-benchers.

The resulting hopeless compromise is back in Parliament next week. Some of them hope to severely limit solar farms, but hopefully that won't pass.

The tories are incapable of delivering on climate change. Even on the easy things where they don't need to spend any money.

This is one of the areas in which Labour is actually demonstrably better. Even if they don't deliver on their planned investment (and I believe they will), fixing the planning rules that prevent onshore wind is something they are certain to deliver on. It costs them no government money, reduces fuel bills, and upsets a handful of rural NIMBYs concerned about house prices who wouldn't vote Labour anyway. Today one of those people can block a wind farm, whereas this is not true for any other form of energy.

I expect Labour will deliver on this one. And that's a clear difference between the parties, in spite of their depressingly Blairite and cowardly messaging lately.

#UK government MPs endorse Parliamentary report finding Boris Johnson guilty of misleading parliament. 354 to 7. Most front bench Tories didn't even bother turn up to agree he should be sanctioned. Their unprincipled cowardice is all the more reason to vote them out asap.
