One of the best ghost stories I've read recently is "The Difficulty of Getting Through To You" by Ren Arcamore.

It starts off seeming quite cozy, but then goes extremely hard (CW domestic abuse, suicide, depression)

Kudos to #CharlesDickens for contriving a way to expand a small story he had previously published. The note preceding The Portrait Painters Story explains this ballsy #writer move. Excellent #JeuDeSociété #coopératif mais j'ignore ce qui existe de bien pour deux adultes (les enfants sont trop jeunes encore) en #j2s pour de la #coopération

Ich habe mir jetzt die vier M.R. James Verfilmungen von Mark Gatiss bestellt. Ich mag die „A Ghost Story for Christmas“ von Lawrence Gordon aus dem 70ern sehr gerne. Mal sehen, ich habe bisher sehr unterschiedliches darüber gehört. Ich bin nicht unbedingt ein großer Freund von Gatiss und seinem Werk, aber manchmal schafft er es doch noch mich zu überraschen.

The Manowick -- Part Two (A Thread)

Torn between their love for their children and the desperate need for deliverance, the villagers hesitated. Until one fateful day, a young woman of extraordinary bravery stepped forward. Holding her newborn child in her arms, she offered her precious gift to the sorcerer, willing to surrender her own flesh and blood to save her village.

Yet, as the sorcerer prepared to accept her sacrifice, a revelation pierced the air like a clarion call. With a voice trembling with determination, the young woman declared her own truth—a truth that would change the course of destiny. She revealed that she was the firstborn of her parents, destined to be offered to the Manowick.

A collective gasp swept through the villagers, their eyes wide with astonishment. The young woman's sacrifice took on a profound meaning. In an act of immeasurable love and unyielding bravery, she shattered the chains of fate that bound her village. With unwavering resolve, she amended her offer, placing her own life on the altar of salvation.

The sorcerer, moved by the young woman's profound sacrifice, accepted her selfless choice. He performed the ancient ritual, harnessing the forces of magic to break the Manowick's hold on the village. As the final incantation fell from his lips, the foul creature dissipated into the night, its malevolence extinguished forever.
