Ich habe mir jetzt die vier M.R. James Verfilmungen von Mark Gatiss bestellt. Ich mag die „A Ghost Story for Christmas“ von Lawrence Gordon aus dem 70ern sehr gerne. Mal sehen, ich habe bisher sehr unterschiedliches darüber gehört. Ich bin nicht unbedingt ein großer Freund von Gatiss und seinem Werk, aber manchmal schafft er es doch noch mich zu überraschen.

Last up on this year’s #ghoststoriesforchristmas viewing: The Stalls of Barchester (1971) - another MR James adaptation. Clive Swift’s Dr Black (seen again the following year in A Warning…) reads in the archives of the episode of Dr Haynes - who succeeded the previous Archdeacon of the cathedral. How did Dr Haynes come by his appointment? We don’t know for sure but his end suggests something not entirely honourable. #ghoststories #cathedral #ghosts

Next on #ghoststoriesforchristmas/ A Warning to the Curious (1972). A proper classic this time round - great adaptation of the MR James story. Peter Vaughan’s Paxton is a much more sympathetic character than many of James’ academics: a clerk made recently redundant taking the time to explore his interest in archaeology. Unfortunately he’ll meet the same end as many of his less sympathetic colleagues. #ghosts #ghoststories

Next instalment of #ghoststoriesforchristmas: A View From a Hill (2005). Excellent reboot going back to James’ source material. Classic set up: the upright academic meddles in things he shouldn’t with the inevitable consequences. Slow moving with sparse dialogue, building the tension. Notable for mainly taking place in bright sunlight - and extra points for a 70s style freeze frame at the end. #mrjames #ghoststories #ghosts

Another lesser known (or regarded) one in the #ghoststoriesforchristmas series. The Ice House (1978). Hardly a ghost story but exceptionally creepy from the sinister brother/sister running the home to the stilted dialogue straight out of a 19th century gothic novel. Gives you a “touch of the cools”

Next up for #ghoststoriesforchristmas: Count Magnus (2022). Pretty good adaption of the MR James story, though a bit lacking in tension building and the final reveal isn’t quite shocking as it could have been. #mrjames #ghoststories

I had to find out more details on the taxi that picks up Prof. Parkins from the station in Miller's WHISTLE AND I'LL COME TO YOU - a Wolseley 21-60, first registered Norwich in June 1933, which neatly gives us a date for when the adaptation written in 1904 is set. #ghoststoriesforchristmas
