Midnight Lace is a 1960 Ross Hunter-produced US crime film set in London which gave Doris Day her last, and best, serious dramatic role. It's almost a proto-giallo, but with echoes of GASLIGHT. A top-notch mystery/suspense/psychological thriller.

The Italian-Spanish co-production MURDER MANSION (1972). Three people take refuge in a spooky house. There are rumours of vampires and witches. But is this a gothic horror movie or a giallo? It doesn't matter. It's crazy oddball and fun and looks good.

The Doll of Satan (1969), an Italian gothic horror film with some krimi and giallo elements. A woman inherits a spooky gothic castle and has visions of dungeons and torture with herself as victim. It's OK but needed a bit more style and energy.

In Luciano Ercoli's interesting 1972 giallo Death Walks at Midnight a model under the influence of a hallucinogenic drug sees a vision of a horrific murder. She finds out such a murder really happened and thinks the murderer is out to kill her.

Alice, Sweet Alice (AKA Communion, 1976) is a Catholic schoolgirl slasher movie with major giallo influences. A weird mix that often threatens to self-destruct but somehow it works.

A movie that has lost none of its shock value but it’s more than just a cheap shockfest. It’s a strange but effective horror film.

Footprints on the Moon (1975) is a delightfully off-beat slice of Italian movie weirdness. Alice (Florinda Bolkan) has been having dreams about astronauts dying on the Moon. A mix of giallo and surrealism. Lots of blurring of the lines between dream and reality. Interesting low-key colour palette.

Cat O' Nine Tails (1971), Dario Argento's 2nd film. The key witness is a blind retired reporter (Karl Malden). The plot doesn’t make much sense (in fact no sense at all) but plot coherence is not a necessary ingredient of a top-class giallo.

Not as good as The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, but still a fine giallo.

The Girl in Room 2a is a giallo-esque film shot in Italy, but directed and co-written by an American, William Rose.

Rose wrote/directed the superb 1965 sexploitation roughie Rent-a-Girl. So what you get here is a combination of two fascinating 60s/70s cult film genres, the giallo and the US sexploitation roughie. Genres with a few things in common, being concerned with weirdness, sex and violence.

Luciano Ercoli’s The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion (1970) is a kind of giallo although to be more accurate it's a giallo-esque suspense crime thriller.

Well-crafted, looks good and by giallo standards the plot makes perfect sense and the solution is clearly explained. Entertaining but lacks the stylistic flourishes I look for in a giallo.

Juan Antonio Bardem's The Corruption of Chris Miller is a 1973 Spanish giallo starring Jean Seberg.

Lots of emotional and sexual games, weird obsessions and twisted sexuality all lead to violence.

It has plenty of subtly creepy atmosphere, a clever literate script, three fascinatingly odd and complex central characters, psycho-sexual weirdness, fine acting and plenty of blood. Great movie.

Aldo Lado's Who Saw Her Die? is a 1972 giallo and watching this movie it’s impossible not to be reminded of Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now although Lado’s film predates Roeg’s by a year. There are striking similarities.

Who Saw Her Die? Is perhaps more of a conventional thriller, albeit a clever and complex one with plenty of psychological depth. A fine suspenseful giallo.

Black Belly of the Tarantula is a 1971 giallo directed by Paolo Cavara and it has most of the giallo trademarks. And it works.

So many gorgeous women in this movie it’s hard to know where to start. Claudine Auger as Laura, Stefania Sandrelli as Tellini’s wife Anna, Barbara Bouchet as a nymphomaniac(!) and Barbara Bach as one of Laura’s employees.

Spasmo is a 1974 giallo from Umberto Lenzi and it’s an odd one. Lenzi wanted to take the giallo in new directions, and he does so.

A dead girl on a beach, but things are not what they seem. And then there are the dolls.

People get killed but we’re not sure who they were or what they were up to.

Weird but excellent movie.

Plot of Fear (1976), a 1976 Italian giallo directed by Paolo Cavara.

It's not a stock-standard by-the-numbers giallo. It has its own distinctive flavour, at times slightly ironic, slightly humorous and slightly fantastic. It’s also perverse and sleazy. With some hints of surrealism.

Stars Corinne Cléry, better-known from The Story of O.

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), Dario Argento's debut feature. Not much gore but incredibly stylish.

The opening sequence may be the best in the history of cinema.

Based on Fredric Brown’s novel The Screaming Mimi, and the twists at the end are delightfully devious.

Spasmo is a 1974 giallo from Umberto Lenzi and it’s an odd one. It's a giallo but it redefines the rules of the genre. People get killed but we’re not sure who they were or what they were up to. And mutilated dolls keep turning up.
