Inside the hole is a vault glowing blue with indecipherable inscriptions. And a giant hand, large enough to hold her. What this “accident” of juvenile archaeology reveals is that there are huge, mechanical body parts strewn all over the planet. They’re activated by nuclear energy (and hence by a given level of technological development). Can our heroes find them all? Can they assemble them? And then can they figure out what this titan is for? Told in a clever epistolary fashion—diaries, interviews, reports—SLEEPING GIANTS races along with the story of an unknown spymaster gathering their team and facing off against the world’s governments (including their own, eventually) to build, drive, and ultimately protect this enormous weapon. It’s partly a geopolitical thriller, partly a mech story, and partly a gently awed meditation on the political consequences of advanced alien life. Is it profound? Not very.
