I've started rolling out buttons and links to run #GLAMWorkbench repositories in the ARDC's new Binder service. You'll need a university login to access this service, but if you don't have university credentials you can continue to use the international, unauthenticated Binder service as before. https://glam-workbench.net/
The international Binder service has been having capacity problems in recent months, so this should take some pressure off and provide a quicker, more reliable, option for Australian university-based researchers. I'm continuing to explore other options as well!
My brain is dead and my head hurts, but I think I can now generate useful RO-Crate metadata from the contents of a #GLAMWorkbench repository...
More adventures in RO-Crate metadata wrangling today. Various roadblocks and frustrations navigated -- I think mostly a result of the Python library being aimed, naturally enough, at finished projects being deposited somewhere, rather that ongoing projects updating and sharing metadata. Basically my aim is to manage basic metadata in the #GLAMWorkbench notebooks themselves, then aggregate and publish via automated RO-Crate creation/update. Or something like that...
Today I've been working on generating RO-Crate metadata for all the #GLAMWorkbench repositories. Down the track this means details of all the notebooks, datasets etc could be harvested into another platform. I'm also working on updating the #Trove Newspaper Harvester so that it describes each harvest you create using RO-Crate.
More on RO-Crate here: https://www.researchobject.org/ro-crate/
This is part of the work I'm doing for tha ARDC's HASS Community Data Lab. #researchInfrastructure #digitalHumanities

It's Friday afternoon, it's #FamilyHistoryMonth, and I'm procrastinating, so here's a post that describes some of the resources in the #GLAMWorkbench that you might find useful for #familyHistory research: https://updates.timsherratt.org/2023/08/18/family-history-resources.html #genealogy

Here's a link that'll run the #GLAMWorkbench's 'Getting started' notebook on the new ARDC BinderHub service. You'll need to sign in using your university login details: https://binderhub.rc.nectar.org.au/v2/gh/GLAM-Workbench/getting-started/HEAD?urlpath=lab%2Ftree%2FUsing_Jupyter_notebooks.ipynb
Yay! The ARDC's #BinderHub service is live! Researchers in Australian universities can now spin up #Jupyter repositories in locally-based virtual machines. https://ardc.edu.au/services/ardc-nectar-research-cloud/ardc-binderhub-service/ π
I'll be adding buttons & links from the #GLAMWorkbench to use the ARDC Binder service β just waiting for a problem with Trove to be fixed by the NLA. #researchInfrastructure

Updated the #GLAMWorkbench list of Australian #GLAM data sources to add the PROV Collection API and remove the MAAS API. https://glam-workbench.net/glam-data-list/ #digitalHumanities

Getting the #GLAMWorkbench ready for the launch of the ARDC's new BinderHub service!
More de-Cloudstor-ifying in the #GLAMWorkbench β I've moved about 3gb of OCRd text from 26,000+ #Trove books to an s3 bucket. I've also added a 'Browse in Datasette' link that uses Datasette Lite to help you search the list of titles, and filter by copyright etc. https://glam-workbench.net/trove-books/ocrd-text-from-trove-books/ #GLAM #digitalHumanities
#glamworkbench #trove #glam #digitalhumanities
With Cloudstor's imminent demise, I've started moving some of the #GLAMWorkbench's pre-harvested collections to alternative accommodation.
First to move are the collections of full text from #Trove's digitised journals (one text file per issue). The zipped text files are now in an s3 bucket, with CSV lists of issues on GitHub. I've updated all the links in this list to take you to the new locations: https://glam-workbench.net/trove-journals/journals-with-ocr/ #GLAM #digitalHumanities

A long-standing #Trove API bug has been fixed β the /newspaper/titles endpoint no longer includes government gazettes (they have their own endpoint). Looks like I can finally retire the #GLAMWorkbench notebook that documented a workaround. #digitalHumanites

I've updated the #Trove API Console to use v3 by default, as I'm not expecting there to be any major changes to the v3 beta. https://troveconsole.herokuapp.com/
The v3 page now includes a display of the parameters in use, and a 'Share' button to copy the example url, and grab some markdown to insert a 'Try it' button in your own pages. There's also a link to an API Status page, which runs and tests all the example queries in the API Console every 6 hours to pick up problems.
The version 2 page has been moved to https://troveconsole.herokuapp.com/v2/ and any v2 links should redirect there. #digitalHumanities #GLAMWorkbench #GLAM

Added an announcement to the top of the #GLAMWorkbench noting the current difficulties with the public #Binder service. The good news is that local alternatives are on their way!
#Trove has added a line to the API v3 beta introduction saying: 'Please note there are various changes to the structure of both json and xml responses.' If you're wondering what these changes *actually are*, head to the #GLAMWorkbench: https://glam-workbench.net/trove-api-v3/
There are lots of (small but significant) breaking changes in v3 that you'll need to address in the next 6 months or so before v2 is switched off. #digitalHumanities
