Crow-stepped gables, fleche and cupola of Pollokshaws Burgh Hall on the southside of Glasgow. Designed by Robert Rowand Anderson in the Scots Renaissance style and constructed in the 1890s, it reproduces details from now-lost Old College buildings on High Street.

The former Baptist Mission Church on Canal Street, Glasgow. It was built in a domestic style in 1898 for mission work in the Port Dundas area of the city. This continued until it closed in 1958. It's one of the few unlisted older buildings left standings in this area.

Martyr's School, Townhead, Glasgow.

Constructed in 1895, this is an early work by Charles Rennie MacKintosh. The general outline of the building follows the requirements of the Glasgow School Board, who commissioned it, but there are plenty of distinctive MacKintosh flourishes, including the classic Glasgow-style ogee domes on the spirelets.

18 Blackfriars Street in Glasgow. A little bit off the beaten track, this is a great example of a Georgian Glasgow building. Constructed around 1790, it's thought to have been designed in a Neo-Classical style by Robert and John Adam.

78 Carlton Place on the south bank of the Clyde in Glasgow. Designed in a classical style by Peter Nicholson and built in the 1810s, it's the centre piece of an impressive block of Georgian townhouses. Lining what was then the upper harbour, these houses would have been occupied by the city's merchant class.

I love this run of old stables behind the Victorian townhouses on Park Gardens in the west end of Glasgow (top left). They're built into the slope and have a garden built on top of them (bottom left) so as to be hidden from the neighbouring townhouses further up the hill. Their chimneys have even been hidden in piers of the railings around the garden so as to avoid intruding on the view (right).

If you ever wonder who designed, built and plastered 22 Park Circus in Glasgow, just nip round the back. As you can see at the bottom of this photo, the architect (James Boucher), the builder (R. McCord) and the plaster (James Steel Senior) all seem to have helpfully inscribed their names there!

All that's now left of the once impressive and commanding edifice that was, until very recently, the Sir John Maxwell School in the Pollokshaws area of Glasgow.

This was a beautiful old building which should never have been allowed to fall so far into disrepair that it had to be demolished.

A B MacDonald's magnificent 1890s People's Palace on Glasgow Green. As the city engineer for 24 years, starting in 1890, MacDonald's contribution to Glasgow's architecture cannot be underestimated, but is all to often overlooked.

Pepperpot corner turret on the Briggait in Glasgow. Designed by Clarke and Bell and constructed in 1873, this market building incorporates the older Merchant's Steeple, which was part of the original Glasgow Guild's hall and dates from 1665.

The SEC Armadillo in Glasgow. Designed by Foster and Partners and constructed in the 1990s, it has become one of the city's most recognisable buildings.

It was originally named the Clyde Auditorium, but because of its shape it gained the nickname of the Armadillo almost as soon as it was completed. Eventually, the owners gave in and officially changed its name in 2017.

Luma Tower on the southside of Glasgow.

Designed by Cornelius Armour in a Steamline Moderne style and built in 1938, it's one of the best preserved Art Deco buildings in the city. It was originally constructed as the Glasgow headquarters of the British Luma Co-operative Electric Lamp Society.
