A B MacDonald's magnificent 1890s People's Palace on Glasgow Green. As the city engineer for 24 years, starting in 1890, MacDonald's contribution to Glasgow's architecture cannot be underestimated, but is all to often overlooked.

William Collins Memorial Fountain on Glasgow Green. Erected in 1881, it features a sculptured bronze female figure by John Mossman.

Many of Glasgow's Victorian public drinking fountains, including this one, were associated with the temperance movement. They aimed to provide a safe and free alternative to drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages at a time when clean water was only just becoming readily available in the city.

The Nelson Monument on Glasgow Green. Built in 1806, it was the first monument to Lord Nelson (who had died at the Battle of Trafalgar the year before) in Britain paid for by public subscription.

It gave rise to the phrase 'You'll die facing the monument', meaning to be executed by public hanging, as the gallows in the nearby Jail Square faced towards it. As a result, it would be one of the last things the condemned would see.

The Justiciary Court on Saltmarket in Glasgow as seen from the old Jocelyn Square on what is now part of Glasgow Green.

Until 1865, anyone sentenced to public execution in this court would have travelled through a tunnel under Saltmarket to emerge into the square, where they would then be hung.

This spot is now marked with a plaque set into the pavement in front of the MacLellan Arch.

A lone Georgian townhouse on Charlotte Street in the east end of Glasgow surrounded by modern buildings.

This house was built around 1790 and is attributed to the school of Robert Adam, one of Scotland's early Neo-Classical architects.

The windows of the Venetian Gothic facade of William Leiper's 1889 Templeton Carpet Factory on Glasgow Green. This one of the city's most distinctive buildings and it's one I can never resist photographing whenever I pass it.

Details on the roof line of the former Templeton Carpet Factory in the east end of Glasgow. Designed by William Leiper with a Venetian Gothic facade and built in 1889, I just love this building.

Emblem of the Glasgw Humane Society on its headquarters on Glasgow Green.

Founded in 1790, Glasgow Humane Society aims to preserve human life in and around the waterways of Greater Glasgow.

Amongst other things, these are the people who retrieve and replace life belts along the Clyde when idiots needlessly throw these important pieces of life-saving equipment into the water.

Children at Play (Springtime) by Thomas John Clapperton, Glasgow Green, Glasgow.

This statue was first shown as part of an exhibition in Kelvingrove Park in 1949. It was later presented to the City of Glasgow by Lord Provost Dr James Welsh and placed in its current location.

Today's animal from Glasgow's architecture is this cheeky ostrich, which appears to have photo-bombed the sculpture of this pair on the Doulton Fountain (designed by Arthur Edward Pearce) on Glasgow Green.

Beside the Nelson Monument in Glasgow Green (you can't miss it its the 144 foot tall pointy thing!) is, to me, a much more interesting one. It's a large, rather out-of-place looking boulder.

The inscription on it details how James Watt had his revolutionary idea for improving how steam engines work in this Glasgow park in 1765. It was an idea that is credited with kick-starting the industrial revolution.

The Doulton fountain, Glasgow Green, August 2022

The Doulton Fountain is the largest terracotta fountain in the world. It was built to be displayed at the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888, then moved to Glasgow Green after the exhibition was over.

Now fully restored. you can see Queen Victoria at the top of the fountain, looking towards the People's Palace museum. To the left, is the former Templeton Carpet Factory.
