Martyr's School, Townhead, Glasgow.

Constructed in 1895, this is an early work by Charles Rennie MacKintosh. The general outline of the building follows the requirements of the Glasgow School Board, who commissioned it, but there are plenty of distinctive MacKintosh flourishes, including the classic Glasgow-style ogee domes on the spirelets.

The former Strathbungo Public School in Glasgow (now Saint Bride's Primary School). Designed by Gordon and Baird, and constructed in 1894, it's a wonderfully imposing building and came complete with a swimming pool in its basement (now closed?).

The wonderful Art Nouveau nameplate on Alexandra Parade Primary School in the east end of Glasgow. The school was designed by MacWhannel and Rogerson and was built in the 1890s.

The tunnel-like boys entrance to the former Rockvilla Public School on Dawson Road in Glasgow.

This school was designed by John Honeyman and was built in the 1870s. An impressive building set high on a hill overlooking the Forth and Clyde Canal, the B Listed building was badly damaged by fire in 1995 and was demolished in 1996.

The former Whiteinch Public School Building on Victoria Park Drive South in Glasgow.

This is a fantastic neoclassical edifice built in 1915 and is one of a collection of Whiteinch public buildings along the same stretch of road which were cut off from the neighbouring Victoria Park by construction of access roads for the Clyde Tunnel and the Clydeside Expressway in the 1960s.

The reverse elevation of the former Garrioch Public School building in Glasgow. Built in 1905 by the Maryhill School Board, it has great classical symmetry, and then there's that wonderful chimney!

Garrioch Publc School, Maryhill, Glasgow. Built in 1905 by the Maryhill School Board. I love the symmetry of this imposing building, with its strong classical influences even at a time when Art Nouveau was probably more fashinable in Glasgow.

To qualify for assistance, children had to be of Scottish extraction and preference was given to those with the surnames of Logan and Johnston (the family names of the husband and wife who founded it).

The former Logan and Johnston School of Domestic Economy, James Street, Glasgow.

Built in 1893 and designed by James Thomson in the Scottish Renaissance style, this school was founded as an independent educational establishment for the assistance of poor or destitute children.
