The electrification of domestic car travel
The Bellingen case
Now that the Gleniffer 'highway' is nearly complete they discover its so past century. The 'Scenic Drive' to Gleniffer has no EV charging network, no cycle paths, no footpaths and no toilets. But you get to experience the change from a quite scenic country road to a highway like ambience leading you along logging sites and tonnes of cement.

How is Bellingen's "Road Renewal Program" going?
The road reconstruction of Gleniffer Road and diversion (Roses Road) is supposed to be completed by July 2023.
A preview at what once was a scenic forest road has now the charm of a highway.
Apart from the logging scars along it, the road is widened and reveals steep bare gullies where the biodiverse flora and fauna has been eliminated.
The widened shoulders of the 'highway' are mostly lined with prefabricated concrete gutters and culverts. The most fertile layer of the earth is sealed with a thick layer of cement. A rock-hard second skin entombs the living, fertile soil and brings great convenience to fossil fuel enthusiasts on their 'drive'. The road shoulder used to be soft with terrestrial orchids growing on the edges. Now it's given the hard shoulder to channel runoff and pollution down into the bush and the creeks as a fast runoff. It's called taming nature.
Concrete is considered the most destructive material on Earth, it is one of the main producers of carbon dioxide. “If the cement industry were a country, it would be the third largest carbon dioxide emitter in the world with up to 2.8bn tonnes, surpassed only by China and the US.”
https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/feb/25/concrete-the-most-destructive-material-on-earth
The channeled cement gutter flow of these hydraulic stormwater structures has negative impacts on stream habitats and biota. Migrating animals find the widened road with slick cement hard to cross. The water quality and habitat become fragmented and degraded.
Soon the speeding vehicles will crack the cement blocks (As can be seen at any NSW roundabout) and they will crumble as rubbish into the bush.
The project doesn't seem to add to Australia's ‘fair share’ to contain global heating or refraining from engaging in extinction.

Bellingen Update in two parts:
Part 1
#Bellingen has been undergoing radical road widening and "Panic logging” for many months. A desperate attempt to convert narrow, windy and sloping forest roads into a wide and straight 'highway' to suit heavy road trains and extraction machinery. The new all-season road will enhance #deforestation and the flow of motorised tourists. It is said. The nexus #GlenifferRd and #RosesRoad and are being worked on most intensively with #Fossilfuel and a generous amount of a tar-like substance.
On some roads the shoulders are shaved of all vegetation to widen it by 2-3 m on either side. This is supposed to convey the illusion that the road is very wide. On others, bulldozers push the 'dirt' and vegetation (and its habitants) down the 'ditch' (Bellinger River or small creeks) Decorative small sandbags are placed sparingly apparently as #SiltControl. The recent rain makes the slimy bare red soil run off, #erosion and #weeds will follow with a vengeance. This is fossil fuel landscaping at its finest. Matting or replanting seems not in sight. Weeds love this disturbed area.
For road users and residents this intensification means detours, various traffic lights, diesel generators, heavy diesel machinery, blockages of the existing rural roads for months and months. Dump trucks and bulldozers add to the ambient #pollution of the air, soil, aquatic systems and living entities.

Update: #Deforestation at Gleniffer Road, along Frenchman's Creek.
Due to the road diversion of #GlenifferRd the eradication of the #biodiversity habitat seems to go unnoticed.
