I listened yesterday to a conversation between Prof. #GlennLoury and Prof. #CornelWest. When asked if it was quixotic to run for the presidency on a third-party ticket, Prof. West acknowledged that his chance of winning was low, but not to be counted out.

2024 should be a good year for third-party candidates. It seems likely that Mr. Trump will be the R candidate. The public might decide Pres. Biden is too old. Perhaps many voters will want another option.

I don't know if any of those other measures show a decline. I can think of reasons why history might be in decline as a field. But maybe the numbers are static...

The most obvious explanation for why PhDs are not becoming professors is simply that American universities are graduating too many PhDs for the number of professorships available: oversupply. That doesn't prove decline at all.

Listening to the first conversation between #JohnMcWhorter and #GlennLoury in 2007, the most surprising thing is not that Prof. Loury is to the left of Dr. McWhorter, but that Prof. Loury's voice is so different. Maybe the recording technology? Deeper and more resonant these days; maybe he feels more comfortable with himself.
