The IRC spam I've seen is mostly from bots that join all the channels that LIST returns. Most IRC daemons will have the ability to make channels +s to not be listed anymore. If you want to still be discoverable, make a second channel #channel-bot-catcher with a note in the topic about where the real channel is. The bots will sometimes reuse IPs, so it is still worth it to gline them based on IP. I have a channel named "#gline-me-please" that a bot sits in and hands out glines to anyone that joins.
