This gorgeous Eastern Swallowtail Butterfly flew past me as I was checking the rain gauge this morning, then landed on a nearby brick wall. Perhaps she was drying off her new wings or just getting warm. I saw one nectaring a daffodil, which usually finish blooming well before the Swallowtails arrive. Glad I have something for them to eat! In the last two years, I saw my first Swallowtails in mid-July.

So the unseasonably warm January weather in central #NorthCarolina encouraged the roses to start sending out leaves early - not buds, mind you, but actual leaves. They started to unfurl just in time for 20-degree freezing temps this weekend. *sigh*
Rose bushes are survivors, I know, but I feel for the chloroplasts anyway.

I genuinely believe that one of the barriers to moving people from somewhat concerned to concerned and active is that they completely misunderstand what it means when we say 1.5% warming.

Some of winter #garden beds are covered & crossing my fingers for the uncovered mustards & chards! J brought in the cured shallots & winter squash from the shed. The electric is on in the #chicken coop so their water doesn't freeze.

I'm glad we've had a few years to get our winter routine in place. Low 20s (F) is Jan/Feb temps but if #ClimateChange has taught us anything, it's to expect #GlobalWeirding
