Live from Gloucester Cathedral, about to experience the majesty of Thomas Tallis' Spem in alium. So excited to hear this masterpiece in person with my husband Tim Mountain. Thomas uses groundbreaking experimentation that challenged the norms. This piece uses 8 choirs and 40 different lines of music. Unusual as he wrote music for Catholic and Protestant churches.

Four photographic moments from our trip to UK in 2007 (ancient history to us, but I’m sure the hasn’t changed a bit). If I remember correctly, it was about 10am. Yes, I snuck in another . :-)

The organist was doing a warmup performance, when slowly, over the span of several minutes, it finally dawned on us that he was playing the theme to Star Trek.

My brothers, my sister-in-law, and I went to see at Friday evening. It was -2°C, there was no heating, and my brother and I were sat by the door. 🥶

The concert was great entertainment, and they had two guest performers: and †; Loyd fucking Grossman! Both were excellent, with the latter doing some serious rocking out singing and playing guitar.

(† for everyone who spells his name wrongly, with two Ls.)

The medieval choir stalls in Gloucester Cathedral have carved “misericords”, “mercy seats”, that the monks who were to stand whilst chanting Holy Office, could raise to perch on, thus taking the weight off their feet. The carvings were generally hidden, but when exposed give a hint of anarchy in the wood carvers’ guild …

I admit I chose this photo for the sheer joy of writing the alt text.
