Hello #histodons
One of the amazing things about #gloucesterwreck is the number of #c17 #wine bottles rescued from the seabed. 149 so far & 49 have some contents & 29 are sealed so contents appear intact. Some have glass seals with owners initials or arms. Here's one going through #conservation & desalinating in its wee water bath, still with a seashell attached.

Hello #Histodons
I’m a cultural historian at UEA & specialize in #earlymodern #maritime #colonial #travelwriting (ranging from #pirates thru #Hakluyt to #shipwreck).
I will spend the next few years working on #gloucesterwreck & a new edition of Hakluyt's Principal Navigations.
On that note, here's the bell, dated 1681, rescued from the Gloucester wreck (sank in 1682) & an underwater image of the site, including cannon. If you want to read my work on the wreck see: https://academic.oup.com/ehr/article/137/586/728/6604921?login=false
