@OE3CTB - you are NOT allowed to add a new summit? I though anybody with a account was, and have been advertising that info.

Could you do me the favor to try it out? If you log in and navigate to cqgma.org/gmafind.php , do you see the UI as given in the screen shot somewhere near the bottom of the left column, in particular, the "Hinzufügen"?

@OE3CTB You could add your favorite peak to the database (yes, you can do that yourself) and activate it through that program. cqgma.org/

GMA was founded exactly because many nice mountaintops never made it into respectively were thrown out of SOTA.

For another aesthetic experience:

My self-build "BCR" CW-only radio is a small plain aluminium box. Six black knobs with no labels - I built this, so know what each is for. 2x16 characters LCD display. Power via 10 x AA rechargeable cell holder. Upper+outer antenna with fiberglass mast. Headphones. A tiny black palm pico key. It all got there via backpack and hours of hiking.

with lot of chrome may be posh. Basic activations can have their style, too.

You could try to activate the same spot and simultaniously. Simply hand in the same log in both programs after you're done. You may even find a place that triples as a activation or quadruples as . Four places to advertise, more QSOs. (Just be careful with the text of your POTA advertisement.)

is rather restrictive which summits they admit to the program. If you know a summit they have not, one option you (almost always) have: Enter that summit into the program cqgma.org/ instead.

One of several things I love about GMA: THIS YOU CAN DO YOURSELF, once you have an account!

The moment that's done, you can put your rig into your backpack and your feet into your boots and be off for a fun activation!

The cqgma.org/ website has been developed by one single person. It will be taken over by a team of volunteers in the coming months. Nothing is decided yet, but I expect usability improvements.

I have no personal experience with activations from USA turf. Last time I visited the latter, I wasn't licensed yet.

For some answer how much of a thing is over there, you can check the global GMA alert web page cqgma.org/smartgma/ .

A fine point: I usually don't call "cq gma" when activating, as QSOs with stations that don't even know what GMA is are still fine. Instead, I might hammer out something like "cq de dj3ei/p on gma da/nd 047 cq de dj3ei/p pse k"

@dj3ei, each time your criticisms of come up, I take another look at the website (cqgma.org/) and get hopelessly confused.

Maybe it's a language barrier, but I don't even see where to start. If I manage to find an activation point near me (I was able to figure this out at one point) and start calling "CQ GMA" in the middle of the US, is anyone going to respond? Or are these two programs that don't have substantial geographic overlap?

POTA isn't for me.

augmented the more prestigious with a *cooperating* lower-level program. could have followed this laudable precedent.

Instead, they behave like wanting to push WWFF out of business.

Spot yourself as co-activating POTA and WWFF, via POTA channels? Compare the two there? Both is against their code of conduct. Accounts ARE disabled for "crimes" like that.

Personally, I prefer good-neighborly cooperation over hostile takeover attempts.

My code of conduct.

My first QSL cards arrived!

I decided to make special ones only for portable operations. What's your opinion?

Bonus: The frontside has a nice soft touch surface which doesn't interfere negatively with other surfaces.

activating trick:

When I'm activating a, say, hill, I call, e.g., (in CW) "cq de dj3ei/p on gma da/nd 047 cq de dj3ei/p pse k".

But I specifically do not call "cq gma", as I'm happy to have a QSO with any amateur radio station that happens to hear me. They all count towards my 4 QSO minimum activation target.

That call is quite a monster, so I mix those CQ calls with plain ones "cq cq de dj3ei/p dj3ei/p pse k".

You write:

"Portable operations is nothing new but centralizing activations with a website seems to have pushed popularity."

I agree. I've seen this happen with , later with , and now with .

The latter is attractive for people who want to drive places, rather than hike, ride a bicycle, or similar, and also has a rich selection of places that can be activated.

What's a cheap starter kid to get started with activations, such as , , and the likes?

I think the answer depends on whether you're able or willing (and happy) to dive into .

If so, there are cheap, but rather performing QRP monoband CW rigs out there, light enough for backpack use.

For one particular example with a good reputation, see the QCX of Hans Summers / QRP Labs, most recent version at shop.qrp-labs.com/kits/qcxp .

When activating or out of my backpack, I find an upper + outer nicely lightweight, easy to erect, and a performer. Needs little feedline, too. One wire up and one wire a meter or so above ground.

Both wires λ/4 gives resonance on one band. Or use with a tuner (mine's a Z-match) for multiband.

Multiband hints: Both wires not longer than 5λ/8 on the high bands avoids wasteful radiation patterns. Not shorter than λ/8, and away from half-wave resonance, the tuner can do it.
