Golden Eagle

On my way home after running a workshop on Mull, I decided to take a detour around some moorland near Inverness.

I certainly got lucky when I spotted two golden eagles circling a hillside, and was surprised to see one drop down into the heather.

Moments later, it took flight with a mountain hare dangling from its talons.

A camera shot this time, from one of my walks on Harris earlier this month.

Minutes before taking this, I had rounded the top of a hill and startled a golden eagle on the ground. No photos, but I can tell you that watching him take off, not 20 feet from where I stood, was breathtaking

Me out for a walk, suddenly deciding to lie down on my back on damp grass and put my binoculars up to my eyes. Why? Because there was a freaking soaring directly overhead, way way up! And while I was watching, a came by and took a dive at it!

I saw a golden eagle yesterday on my mid-morning trek between two job sites. It was sitting on a fence post next to a dirt road. Pretty much at eye level with me, so I got a could look and feel confident. The only other bird it could be is a juvenile bald eagle. And this had that faint golden gleam.

The Golden eagle is an almost daily sight for me here in Lanjaron in the Granada province. Our work predominantly in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Spain and Alpujarra (the foothills of the Sierra Nevada) bring me into regular contact with the flora and fauna of our area.

Courtship Display.

Here is an image made up of 15 shots of a pair of golden eagles performing their courtship display, last week.

There is no order to the images, but they do show the moves and shapes they pull as they swoop down and soar back up, covering a large area in doing so.

Spectacular to watch.

Here's another from the encounter, just before the eagle was lost from sight behind a rocky outcrop.

Last time I saw one as close as this, I forgot I was using a zoom lens. Thankfully this time I remembered, and gave the eagle a bit more room in the frame.

I've lost count of the number of times I've trudged up the hills, sat waiting in the cold breeze and rain, and seen almost nothing.

Today was different. The golden eagle had read my mind, seen what I had imagined might happen, and kindly followed the script.

I spotted it perched on a ridge in the distance, and it took flight, heading towards me, then drifting by, below, lit up by the winter sunshine.

Magic. 😎
