Here, in Austin, Google is hammering us to switch our Internet provider to Google Fiber. We are still using a smaller, Texas-based provider, Grande (which recently changed their name to Astound). I am tempted to switch to Google Fiber, but I am, frankly, skeptical about trusting Google with my data. I am not a tech person, so please don’t ridicule me if you think I am being “paranoid.“ But I’d like to hear what the knowledgeable techies here I think about this. #googlefiber #google #privacy

@arstechnica I mark anything #GoogleFiber as a scam because it's always "only available" in very locality restricted deployments.

I live in residential of city where G-F refuses to literally cross the street to trench deployment. A city where Google has a multi-story branch office. Now ~10+ years since they "launched" G-F in area.

Meanwhile, still no other telco fiber either, and only option is 20+ year cable monopoly by Cox.

This in why #5G or #Starlink is actual reality.

I have a theory that one of the reasons #GoogleFiber is experiencing delays now is because of their long "pause" in deployments. They didn't have vendor relationships they could use to skip the line or get minimum guaranteed delivery when they suddenly decided to ramp up again. But also their history is one of being very late at rolling out service anyway. #broadband

I can't wait until I can get #GoogleFiber at my home in Riverton, Utah! For those that already have Google Fiber, what things can I do to my home network in preparing for it to come to my house? What things do you wish you had done previously?

When my internet from #GoogleFiber went down this evening I called in to report the outage and I heard an automated message saying they were making changes to their network in order to “optimize “ my internet experience. On a hunch I disabled the WLAN VLAN and QoS settings on my router and internet was restored. So nice of them to give me a heads up of their changes beforehand.
