If you search "wood smoke pollution" on #PubMed, #GoogleScholar, etc, there are thousands of research papers that detail the harm caused by wood smoke pollution.
The people most at risk, usually women & children, that use solid fuels to cook in enclosed buildings, e.g. , in Africa, often develop respiratory diseases
Google Scholar astounds me sometimes, and not in a good way. How is it that the "real" URL for this paper, namely the one the DOI points to, is the second last of 11 results? This means that clicking on the paper from a Scholar search will never give you the real article location.

Though as Ted points out, it's unlikely that any horse has ever elected to undergo castration.
Missing:
A browser plugin to quickly copy an article's #BibTeX entry to the clipboard.
#GoogleScholar's can be wildly wrong, #WebOfScience is weird, slow and #paywall'ed, doesn't really have books and often makes ALL CAPS entries (wtf). Best ist to grab the citation directly from the publisher. But every website does it differently and some only have RIS or something and you need to convert it with #pandoc 🙄
A plugin to simplify this would be very helpful.

As part of my personal #TwitterMigration, I've updated my personal web site (https://www.shawnmjones.org) so that my social media icons are at the top as well as the bottom. This is the next step toward using my domain name, not my Twitter Handle, on public interactions like slides.
I have icons for #Mastodon, #Bluesky, #Threads, #Twitter, #GitHub, #LinkedIn, #GoogleScholar, and #ORCID.
"Why Twitter?” So that when people find my Twitter handle elsewhere they can confirm that it is the same me.

A few days ago I saw a list of #academic and #research focused #search alternatives to #googlescholar
thanks to the general unsearchability of Mastodon I can't find that list now when it would be useful for someone I know
If you, yes *you* happen to have that list handy, could you help a nerd out and @ me in the replies so I can pass it along? tyvm :blobcatnerd:

38th #academic year in #Japan finished, two more to go! Students and teachers still suffer from the #pandemic, however. Although paid by class hours these days, I spent much time e-mailing individual students, and I helped a student pass by spending extra time on campus in #Osaka.
I'm glad to have joined #Mastodon as an #ethical alternative to #Twitter. It takes some extra steps, but it seems to attract good people in #universities, #IT professions, and #journalism. I am managing the 🦣 groups @OnlineEducation and @Bilingualism that you search for and join, then see and share posts to the group.
Free services like #GoogleScholar are useful for #research. How and why career #academics should set up a #Citation Profile: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/322925847
Research #repositories are useful and allow for some interaction, but articles are easier to access if you join (for free). So I hope to see you at https://wilmina.academia.edu/SteveMcCarty (join over 800 followers) or https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Steve-Mccarty (55 recommendations).

@hildabast Thank you! I'm not sure I understand why #InternetArchiveScholar was summarily dismissed as being too small. Nowadays I use it as my primary academic search engine, for two reasons: 1) it tends to have more #OpenAccess / full text links than anything else; 2) advanced search actually works and results are generally more consistent and reliable.
If I fail to find anything, I proceed to check #GoogleScholar, where typically I then have to browse dozens of pages of unrelated junk.

@hildabast I also like #ResearchRabbit, but I wouldn't consider it a replacement to #GoogleScholar. I use both.

@hildabast I tried the same keyword search with scinapse.io and #GoogleScholar and the #scinapse results were more relevant. Just don't trust what comes up when you search your own name. It's hilariously inaccurate!
Has google scholar changed it's recommendation algorithm in the last six months?
It seems to be recommending (based on my publications) completely different stuff to me now than it was before christmas.
OTOH, I do have a somewhat eclectic publications list.
