I watched for the first time tonight. The screenwriters lost me within the first ten minutes, when refused to go anywhere until she was allowed to bring her hair dryer, nail polish, and make up into the rain forest. And the portrayal of the local Rwandans…Yikes.

@twt @rayckeith Totally agree!

I've had the great privilege of visiting the place mentioned in the original post, Volcanos National Park in Rwanda. Went on a hike up a mountain with guides to see the Highland Gorillas there. They're absolutely amazing. They live in an extended-family group with individuals of all sizes and ages.

Some were acting playfully and trying to get our attention, but others were clearly keeping a wary eye on us (even though we were keeping at a safe and respectful distance) in case they needed to step-in to protect the group from strangers.

I was on the tail-end of the group, and as we were leaving, I saw a Silverback who'd been quite defensive-looking had positioned itself between its group and our group. It stretched and relaxed, and caught my eye to let me know it was seeing-off our group. It was a very human gesture, and made it plain to see how closely related gorillas and humans are.
