Fact check: true!

Folklore says that today barn gnomes (nisser/tomtar) all over Scandinavia must get their much anticipated Yule porridge with lots of butter, accompanied by traditional Yule ale. If they don't get their meal, all hell breaks loose.

The Yuletide nights are really dark in Scandinavia and were thought to be a time of magic, mystery and danger. According to folklore the supernatural creatures that dwell underground in the forest, will come out of their realm and wander around in the darkness.

MARI LWYD: A Welsh Christmas tradition, the name may come from 'grey mare' or 'grey mary'. People go from door-to-door holding a horse's skull on a stick covered in a white sheet and with eyes of lights. The Mari Lwyd would be offered food and drink at each house.

The curtains of the bed were drawn aside; starting up into a half-recumbent attitude, Scrooge found himself face to face with the unearthly visitor who drew them.

It was a strange figure -- like a child: yet not so like a child as like an old man, viewed through some supernatural medium, which gave him the appearance of having receded from the view, and being diminished to a child's proportions.

Quite satisfied, he closed his door, and locked himself in; double locked himself in, which was not his custom. Thus secured against surprise, he took off his cravat; put on his dressing-gown and slippers, and his nightcap; and sat down before the fire to take his gruel.

The 13th Zodiac

The path the sun traces across the sky crosses over constellations we associate with the zodiac. Which constellation the sun was in when you were born defines your “zodiac sign”. But when astronomers defined the constellation boundaries they added a 13th zodiac one. From roughly November 30th to December 16th the sun is in Ophiuchus - a large, beautiful constellation of a person holding a snake. Do you know anyone who is an Ophiuchian?

Bells have always had a place in folklore and customs from calling worshippers to Churches and temples, to warding off evil spirits or warning of an attack!

The winter months especially are regarded as full of evil spirits which is why a lot European countries have 'bellringers' to mark the end of a dark winter and renewal of spring.

The Zvončari (Bellman) of Rijeka, Croatia travel from village to village ringing their bells in order to scare away the evil spirits of winter. In the Alpine regions of Austria, Switzerland and Bavaria, we have the Glöckler and Perchten! In Scandinavia, bells are thought to be one of the reasons trolls were frightened off.

Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it. And Scrooge's name was good upon anything.

Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate.

Oh! But he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, shrivelled his cheek, stiffened his gait; made his eyes red, his thin lips blue and spoke out shrewdly in his grating voice.
