Instagram readies to launch Twitter competitor

It is not that I want to inform you of the Instagram launch, but of this at the end of the article:

"Whether or not it’ll have the ability to disrupt Twitter remains to be seen. Other alternative options (remember Mastadon?) have failed to take flight."

What is this Mastadon? And if they mean #Mastodon then how wrong can they be?
