#GovHack challenge. Hereβs our explainer video for our project βThe Blue Lineβ #STEMinists
Second day of #GovHack - joining up Hobart flood risk map, Hobart βbin dayβ map and Google school locations for our climate change focused project: βThe Blue Lineβ Launceston #STEMinists #RideYourBike

Just signed off from my first #GovHack session. Itβs always such a mess on the first night!! We are really interested in climate change, so have shortlisted about five climate change challenges. #STEMinists
Anyone else doing #GovHack this year? 18-20 August. Its coming up fast. Won the Launceston comp a few years ago with the STEMinists. Maybe we can do it again π€
Looks like there's only a digital event for #GovHack Tasmania this year? I've been participating in physical events since 2013. Which I've mostly enjoyed, hacking away.
It's definitely changed over the years, especially in the last few years. Less technically-oriented entries and fewer people I've met or built connections with, personally. Valid entries but less impressive to me with my technical background.
Back in the early days I had lots of fun building different things and hanging out with friends over the weekend.
The next generation of emerging hackers and makers, like me from 2013, I hope might bring some energy back into it. If that's what they want to do?
Edit: I should mention Iβm very grateful for the volunteers who have run it over the years, theyβve done a good job.
I've been attending #GovHack since 2013 (as a participator or a volunteer) and I think I might give it a miss this year. I think that's fair.. I do like hackathons but perhaps I might find something else to do that weekend.. Assuming it's on in Hobart, unsure..
In the lead up to #EverythingOpen on March 14-16, we'll be sharing session details and speaker bios, to give you a taste of what to expect.
First up is Pia Andrews @Greebo. You may know her from previous projects such as #GovHack, and she has a passion for both #OpenData and #OpenGovernment.
She'll be talking about "Creating #OpenSource Legislation as Code" - posing the question "What if we had open source legislation as code as a public utility?"

@mikejones @Simone66B @bestqualitycrab @Diana_mammalecology @theconversationau I remember that back from my #govhack days - such an excellent source of data that could be overlaid with other data to build a rich picture of an area's ecosystems. In a way, #hackathon like govhack provided an incentive or driver to keep APIs like ALA well-maintained. I wonder what other incentives could be used?
Good evening #folx, and welcome to today's edition of Kathy's #connectionlist #connection #introduction, where I curate a collection of interesting people and surface them - to connect us all more richly and deeply on the #Fediverse.
@pbone is a Mozillian and I'll be forever grateful to him and the Aussie team who made me so welcome as a part-timer. Thank you, Paul! π¦πΊ

I met @gavintapp through the #opendata and #govhack communities - and he's into #data π¦πΊ
@rana is new to #Mastodon and I'd like everyone to say hello and make her feel welcome, please. Welcome, Rana! π
@pdcawley has a mighty fine #beard and they are a #folk singer #folksinging. They are also into #bread and #breadmaking. This means they have enough points to become an honorary Melbourne / Naarm person. There's a points system :-) π¬π§
@kimberlee is a Professor of #law in #Sydney and a long-time friend of the Aussie #opensource community π¦πΊ
@joncruz is amazing and if you've ever used #Inkscape you have Jon to thank. Thank you so much, Jon! Hope you're well! πΊπΈ
