1 item in https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2023/08/weeknotes-fin-so-what-did-i-accomplish/ makes me think I would love to hear more from other #OpenGovernment #GovTech folks about how to mitigate the negative impact of agencies publishing so much of their info as PDF files.
@Edent reflects on his recent work on open tech in the UK government:
"I found no adequate way to stem the tide of PDFs being uploaded to GOV.UK.... Everyone agrees that PDFs are inaccessible and don't work properly on mobile. But publishers *love* a fixed layout. So they stay."
Y'all should read this compelling piece from Marianne Bellotti - organizations should be investing in training their own staff, not outside consultants:

I've been pushing this concept in #govtech for years - we need to upskill and not just rely on external folks to fix our problems.
The BBC (social.bbc) joining the Fediverse (even as a limited, timeboxed experiment) is probably gonna make some folks annoyed at a corporate presence in our niche, weird space.
But I kinda approve actually, for much the same reason I like that the European Commission (social.network.europa.eu) and German government (social.bund.de) are here too.
It shows they value direct communication and meeting people where they are—instead of forcing citizens to go to them or to maintain a presence on places like Facebook.
I'd quite like to see the UK Government set up a fediverse instance just so you're not required to have a Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn profile to see stuff, cuz that seems to be the only places most departments and ministers actually proactively publish things and they’re all walled or semi-walled gardens at this point.
@mlanger that's a great idea. A former colleague told me about a decade ago that he couldn't understand why social media wasn't considered a public utility and regulated as such. I've always wondered how a public utility social media could function, but having their own fediverse instance is the most feasible suggestion I've heard.
Any feds out there working on this?
Question for anyone who has managed (or anyone really) a government social media account.
How much constituent communication came back through the account?
Every single day, many talented programmers tirelessly work behind the scenes to ensure the smooth functioning of our government, using open source.
Having more passionate individuals in our public institutions will help.
In the eleventh episode of "Let's talk about public code," we talked to Gijs Hillenius about policy for open source in the EU, its development and more. Listen: https://podcast.publiccode.net/e/11-gijs-hillenuis-european-commision-ospo/
