I'm working on a paper about ungrading--making the case that how we grade has major downsides worth considering. My research assistant reading over the paper gave me a fun insight:

"In the final paragraph, I think you misspelled "cramming" as "cramping" but it turns out both are true with research showing stress does increase cramping."

Got to love when my typos are more knowledgeable than myself...

I somehow earned straight As for the Spring 2023 term: Two As at United Theological, and an A+ for the class I audited at Cherry Hill. That means I have actually maintained my 4.0 average through 11 terms of graduate school!

So much that I'd neglected so many of my tasks and #homeworks, that I'd often take the longest to finish tests or #pop-quizes.

One of the things I love about my kid's #highschool #baseball team is that they have weekly study hall sessions for 1 hour to help the players keep their #grades up. It'd be nice if more teams did that.

A note to any #recruiters who ask for info about how someone did in college: it fundamentally doesn't matter what #grades someone got, it matters what they learned.

As an example, I attended a school which has an outright deflationary grading curve. Even in classes where I learned lots, sometimes I got low marks—I got a low grade in Algebra 1, for instance, and then much higher in Honours Linear Algebra.

Finally, what are you getting by hiring only people with top marks? A #FearOfFalling.

A grade represents a hopefully-mostly-objective abstraction of how much you learned about 1 subject in 1 class at 1 point in time, as I & others tried our best to teach the material.

"Grade grubbing" sucks but is the natural consequence of trying to quantify the fuzzy concept of learning and then attaching highly specific but arbitrary cut-offs to high-stakes opportunities that can have a major impact on someone's future. 🤷‍♀️ We can shit talk grade-grubbers or we could fight to de-center #grades and use more meaningful #assessment practices.
