Younger kid was asking if I’d had classes that were curved and if I hated them. Told them I got an A in a #gradschool class where I scored 50% on the exams (#Organometallics taught by Wolczanski) and that it was my 2nd favorite class (after #Polymers by Coates).

They asked what I would score now. I estimated 30% without retaking the class and 70% if I did.

I started #GradSchool in #Astrophysics today.

I'm super excited about this! It's been a major goal of mine since I was a little kid.

However, it means I'll have to budget my free time (I don't like the capitalist implications of that concept). I'll be busier than before. The time I will have, I'd like to spend more of it writing creatively and hanging out with friends, and less of it on social media, games, and oversleeping. I think I'm spending the right amount of time reading for curiosity/pleasure.

So I'll probably be less active on Mastodon. Don't worry, I'm not going away completely; you all bring something deeply meaningful to my life, and I try to do the same. But I have to start thinking about the best uses of my time, and frankly I suck at that.

With the start of the academic year, I want to repost my expert learning article. Soon, graduate students will start their first lab rotations. A lucky few will walk in, and things will work seemingly magically on day one. For most, this marks the start of a sometimes arduous journey of learning to be an expert experimentalist. I was a little worried that I might have lost my writing ability, since my last writing class was 30-*cough*-some years ago.

In a victory of human versus robot, I was able to produce a research paper for my #gradschool class with 0% #ChatGPT, and 0% #plagiarism as shown by the picture below.

The son starts driving home tomorrow from his summer job in upstate #NewYork, back here for a few weeks before heading off to #GradSchool.

He was kind/foolish enough to let us track his phone on Google Maps, so we'll be able to watch his 4-day trip. Which is, to be honest, quite fun.

I made it! I'm in the "I hate my dissertation" stage of the PhD. So I word vomited everything I hate about it in my warmup writing memo.

Now I'm blocking out the critic as best I can and setting a pomodoro to just get words on the page. 🙉🧋💻

Did you know that there's an Amtrak #train that runs between Chicago and San Francisco and a lot of places in between?
I've taken it and it's a gorgeous trip, especially through the mountains in winter. Additionally, it's much more #Climate friendly than flying!
