My final article in a series of three is now out at Digits and Threads!

digitsandthreads.ca/how-to-kni

The series is about knitting your grafts instead of sewing them, and this final instalment is about grafting more complex stitch patterns together in pattern.

You'll need a Studio-level subscription to read the whole thing (their content makes it worth it).

Successful graft from last year looking good.

When we bought this place there were a heap of unidentified fruit trees in a total unkept state.

I've been slowly pruning them back and thinning them out. Last year I started grafting on some that were weedy plums. Great to see some success!

Will try some more this year after I've thinned a few more trees out.

Hakea clavata (coastal hakea) is an interesting WA species with distinctive thick, fleshy leaves + pink scented flowers in winter. The one grafted plant I have in the garden (Corunna, NSW) is now almost 18 yrs old and still looking great with just a light prune each year. It's currently attracting a lot of winter insects - including the common jezabel (Delias nigrina) - plus adding a very pleasant fragrance to the garden near the house.

Unfortunately not a Hakea often seen in nurseries - I've only ever grafted a single plant (onto H. salicifolia) ... although I have had a 100% success rate so far ... ;)

I've got another new article out at Digits and Threads!

digitsandthreads.ca/how-to-kni

This is the sequel to the previous article I posted about, and there's a third part to come! It's about knitting your grafts insead of sewing them, and this particular article focuses on grafting two ribbed pieces together in pattern.

You'll need a Studio-level subscription to read the whole thing (worth it; they have great content).

Kanko bai Ume boshi & waneta plums grafted so far today - both on St Julien & American plum rootstock plants.

After a little rest - I'm going to try to get the 3 Asian pear varieties grafted today - so I can get the Provence quince rootstock plants used & set aside - with the 2 other quince trees that I may well just plant in the front yard.

Even better, it's just a Part One - there's more to come! It's about knitting your grafts instead of sewing them; a refinement and major expansion on a video I did a few years back (YouTube channel in bio).

You'll need a Studio-level subscription to read the whole thing (their content is wonderful).

Alright, I'm done at least in making all the labels for all but the quince scionwood variety that I've received of my orders & the citrus varieties.

I don't really want to do anything more than what I've received, over company's having possible issues filling said orders.... This includes my plan to label the rootstocks in addition to the scions, which will greater help me track what does best with what in time.

Okay the 2nd avocado tree grafting attempt was indeed made last night/early this morning. Hopefully later today- among all the other longer tasks ahead-I'll at least manage to start sizably at making the graft labels. 1st step on that being to write out different sets of them, 2nd to lacquer over said writing, 3rd letting the lacquer dry, 4th storing most of said labels, until the rootstock plants arrive.

....when you're grafting over 100 trees, you need to be organized.

Failure on the first attempt with the avocado tree grafting, as the graft dried out & broke off, so later tonight I'll get another piece of the larger one - as all those scions I ordered are still in the refrigerator- and try this again.

I also noticed 2 of the refrigerator bound scions might be drying out a little, so I'm going to give those a careful look. The mainstay of rootstock plants I ordered not arriving for another 2-3 weeks has it that I might just get a seedling or 2

*almost done*

Of course, I'm two stitches out... well, it'll get covered by whatever edge-treatment I eventually choose for this.

For 2023 I would like to shift back to homesteading, gardening and foraging although being truthfully informed and helping to move our government in a positive direction sometimes demands far more attention than I would prefer - it's a crucial civic duty for the future benefit my neighbors and children.

<laughing> Me! You're Me!

Usually patterns leave it up to you exactly *how* you want to sew up the holes. I take a look at the mess I created there, and decide if I can do or if I need to take a long yarn tail and tighten up a *lot* of holes. Sometimes I go back and forth for several rows, doubling each stitch in the loose area.

But that's for gifted sweaters! For me... so long as I love how it ended up, the sooner I can wear it the better.
