"On a Carousel" is a song written by #AllanClarke, #GrahamNash and #TonyHicks. It was released by #theHollies as a single in February 1967, having been recorded the previous month, on the #Parlophone label in the UK and #Imperial in the US. Nash would opine: "'On a Carousel' was one of the Hollies' best songs. It's a pop song with an infectious chorus, but flirts with gorgeous shifts in rhythmic texture [that keep] the melody from becoming predictable.

"Southern Cross" is a song written by #StephenStills, Rick Curtis, and Michael Curtis and performed by the rock band #CrosbyStills_Nash. It was featured on the band's #DaylightAgain album and was released as a single in September 1982. Stephen Stills sings lead throughout, with #GrahamNash joining on the second verse. Because David Crosby did not reunite with Stills and Nash until the album was well underway.

Today’s listening is ‘Graham Nash David Crosby’, the 1972 album by Crosby & Nash.

Helped by an assortment of ‘heavy friends’ (such as Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Leland Sklar, David Mason etc), C&N put together a pleasing album of tunes, the best of which (‘Page 43’ and ‘The Wall Song’) were written by Crosby.

The album is dedicated ‘To Miss Mitchell’. I bet when she heard it she probably thought “Is this the best that you can do boys?”!

Sunday Music Selection: A few days ago I listened to the Broken Record podcast. Rick Rubin was interviewing Graham Nash (Part 1 and Part 2). Toward the end of Part 2 Rubin asked Nash about Just a Song Before I Go. Nash was in Hawaii and said he was bet $500 that he couldn't write a song before he was supposed to leave the next morning. This is the song he wrote; it is such a fine example of the incomparable vocals that were CS&N.

Love them or hate them, those Hanson boys have some chops. I guess when you’ve sung together essentially non-stop for three decades or more, you get a feel for it. They love taking time in the middle of their live shows to come to the front of the stage with a single mic (or no mic) and do at least one number a cappella. Sometimes it’s this one.

This particular version is from 2004’s “Underneath Acoustic Live,” which - as the name suggests - was a DVD of live performances supporting the release of the “Underneath” album. Although “Teach Your Children” is not on “Underneath” or ANY of their primary album releases, the band has performed this song live off and on enough that most fans consider it more or less canon.
