Fun 1:15 drive this morning to #GrandJunction Great scenery along I-70 from Silt. Spent 4 ½ hours hopping from lookout to lookout at #ColoradoNationalMonument. and a 90 minute hike from the visitors center to Window View on the Canyon Rim Trail. Awesome scenery, especially Ute Canyon; one of my faves. Best of all, few other people present. Afterward, a tiring 90 minute drive to our next base in Ridgway. Our #AirBnB has terrific views into the #SanJuanMountains. #Vacation

Interesting story with a bunch of different aspects.

It'd be good for Grand Junction to get the tech hub money. And that would only accelerate turning the area bluer.
Less sure about the tech boosterism around CO River control. Good to identify the vulnerabilities.
Their decision to go it alone rather than w/ the state raises some questions.
Will be interesting to watch.

Opening up the canals to pedestrian / bicycle traffic has been a goal for a long while. Seeing that it's being discussed as a potential part of the trail improvements in Grand Junction is exciting!

The issue of explaining what makes them "closed" in any legal sense right now is still WIP. Ownership of the dirt is not relevant to the right of access given they are public and/or municipal, no?

I spent about 15 minutes trying to find this to explain to my parents about ranked choice voting:

Colorado, Grand Junction specifically, held the first preferential/ranked choice vote in US history in 1909. The library of congress has a copy of the ballot showing how simple such voting was.

If only we could get the county charter rewritten to use such ballots again!

At a gas station in #GrandJunction last summer a customer who had a revolver on his hip got into a verbal altercation with the cashier in front of me.

The guy got heated and placed his hand on his hip next to it and sort of leaned in. The cashier raised his voice and lifted his shirt showing holstered ppk and held his hand over it.

I left.

I'm not sure calling them out will play well when a frightening number are that into the cowboy head space.

The #discord for my hometown has an event channel that someone posted a "dads-to-be meet and greet" at a pregnancy center run by an evangelical anti-abortion church. The ad didn't mention the affiliation, so I weighed in that I wished they would "wear their #political stripes on their sleeve" in it.

A couple users were deeply hurt and accused me of injecting politics.

For pointing out that I didn't veer off topic, the mods #banned me.
