I haven’t shared an outline yet, but this is like draft number 29 of the TOC for Exploring Graph Theory with Julia:
Part 1: “Pure” graph theory
1. What is a graph?
2. Telling graphs apart
3. Drawing graphs
Part 2: “Applied” graph theory
4. Graphs and maps
5. Graphs and industry
6. Graphs and games
7. Graphs and music
8. Graphs and the universe
9. Graphs and knowledge
Part 1 is almost mapped out and ready to be drafted!

How will global #trade networks change due to #ClimateChange
Interesting paper by Johanna Hedlund et al.: https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/aca68b
I like their simply approach using #GraphTheory. This means they can look at this without making any major assumptions and thus isolate the pure effect of climate change.

@Urban_Hermit It is a pity that the #Google algorithms, among them #PageRank and #HITS, which were the primary building block of Page & Brin's #IT empire, are now reduced to a mere cherry scent on big, commercial, ad-based #ML revenue-generating cake 😒
We were using these algorithms during our #graphTheory lectures, as simple, yet surprizingly powerful #networkAnalysis tools.

@bbolker In this specific case (& more generally) what about:
* network-informed citation metrics such as a centrality measure [1].
* On a social front, considering representative papers from PIs that have produced disproportionate numbers of impactful mentees (i.e., assigning value to #EmotionalLabor).
* What voices have been traditionally excluded. E.g., #indigenous ecologists may have unique outlooks on shared problems.

Presented my scientific artwork on network lasers at Imperial Lates: Tiny Science. Our research on network lasers combines #Nanophotonics, #GraphTheory and #MachineLearning to create tiny lasers whose colour of emission can be finely controlled.

Latest research from my collaborators at #ImperialCollegeLondon, combining #LaserPhysics and #GraphTheory: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/news/241354/spiderweb-like-lasers-emit-light-controlled-colours/
Traditional lasers amplify light by repeatedly passing it through a lasing medium between two mirrors. Instead, by structuring the lasing medium in the form of a network, we can choose which regions of the network to amplify. We can then use this freedom to select the colour emitted by the laser.

Survey and Taxonomy of Lossless Graph Compression and Space-Efficient Graph Representations
http://arxiv.org/abs/1806.01799
gives an impression overview of lossless graph compression methods from 3 different perspectives:
- research areas (what do people in your field use?)
- techniques (how the graph is compressed)
- features (what type of graph/property are the focus)

@ccppurcell finally, someone new is posting into #graphTheory 🎉
Nice work!
Btw, some tips about Mastodon:
- we try to use camelCase in hashtags here, for better readability and for screen-readers
- if you don't want to flood the local timeline, you can put all posts after the first one in "unlisted" mode (switch the 🌍 icon to 🔓 ) but know that only public (🌏 ) posts appear in hashtag searches, so all posts containing hashtags should be public, else the hashtag is useless (like mine above)
#PhD offer (in French but you can contact them to ask about it in English) on the study of non-violent protest actions and their potential impact.
The PhD will focus on the analysis of protest actions (like the Rebellion of One from XR) and use #graphTheory, modeling, and statistical analysis to evaluate their potential impact, notably on traffic.

The job is in the #ComplexNetworks team in Paris.

What kind of #network do we want for #Mastodon (and #Fediverse in general)?
The answer may vary depending on users and communities, but let's discuss where the new follow-recommendation tool of Mastodon 3.5 leads us (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/15945).
The evolution of a network where new users preferentially follow existing influencers can be modeled as a Price/BA network.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barab%C3%A1si%E2%80%93Albert_model
You end up with few large influencers.
Honestly, I'm not a fan...

Woah! Just realized that @tiago is on the #Fediverse, and apparently since 2018, no less!
(thanks @snehalshekatkar for the boost that made me notice)
That's definitely a great feature for the #graphTheory / #complexNetworks landscape here, if your into these topics 😀
Now I may see SBM and #graphTool news on the fediverse 👌

People have been using the clustering coefficient (CC) to characterize their favorite #networks (weighted/directed or not) for a long time, but do we know how to best define it depending on the #graph and #research question?
Our latest paper provides an overview of CC properties and interpretations, plus new fully directed and weighted definitions that we think should be useful in many fields.

OK, to compensate the recent lack of #paperOfTheDay, here's a new preprint of mine:
"Weighted directed clustering: interpretations and requirements for heterogeneous, inferred, and measured networks"
https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.06318
I'll give details in the next post, but even if you're not into #graphTheory, you may want to check section IV.B because it talks about the #Fediverse.
I'm trying to increase its visibility by including it in my #research so I'd be happy to have feedback about it.
