This was quietly sitting so close to us – I was thinking about a grasshopper pattern that I have in my car, but I did not fly fish 😉

Instead, I just took a picture of this grasshopper with Big Bearhole Pond in the background 😊

Its been a little rainy here today and I thought that I would grab a little time on a local Common thinking that the birds might be more active when it stopped. I was right! Not only did I come across a Spotted (which would have made it a special visit) but a Warbler too. Which made it very special!!

Camouflage is all about the right place at the right time. The mystery is how does our vision learn to overcome some cues (like color and pattern) to focus on others (like symmetry and silhouette) to overcome the confusion effect and detect the animal.

A tiny linocut I made a few years ago: the red-legged grasshopper.

One of the most common grasshoppers in NA, these are the most commonly seen grasshoppers in the NE US & S Canada. Reddish-brown on their backs, yellow-green below, they are named for their orangy-red legs. In high-density, these grasshoppers can be considered a garden or agricultural pest who eat grain.
