50 years ago today, the #gratefuldead in virginia, a really fun show. doug sahm opens & martin fierro (on tour with sahm) joins the band for a few songs on sax, reprising album parts. early fall ’73, show #3. soundboard: https://archive.org/details/gd73-09-11.sbd.lanum.184.sbeok.shnf [1/7]
I am a Mickey Hart Respecter so big ups to the man on his birthday. While my favorite extended period of #GratefulDead music is the (second) single-drummer era of 1972-74 that was without him, I also love his contributions over the life of the band and equally his solo career output. My favorite of his side albums is the magnificent oddity Däfos with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. I won't even bother linking to a streaming version. It should only be heard on vinyl or lossless digital (CD/FLAC)
#GratefulDead drummer #MickeyHart was born 80 years ago today. His performances were the highlight for me of the recent #DeadandCompany tour. His solo albums are very underrated; this was recorded 20 years ago and still sounds like music from the future. https://youtu.be/PVjtKIMka8c?si=uRlWuFkf4BV0tvRJ

I’ve never heard this Beach Boys version of #GratefulDead Cold Rain and Snow until just recently.
Kinda like hearing “fast” They Love Each Other for the first time.

40 years ago this afternoon, the #gratefuldead in #SantaFe, the 1st of 2 shows beloved by deadheads, promoted by woodstock producer (& europe ’72 colleague) john morris. wavy gravy & ken kesey sightings. late summer ’83, show #13. nice soundboard with everybody (including weir’s guitar) balanced: https://archive.org/details/gd1983-09-10.139299.sbd.eaton.miller.flac1648

Micro-kvetch: I adore Amir Bar-Lev's epic, passionate Prime Video documentary on #GratefulDead, "Long Strange Trip." See it! But the credit on my name displays the face of the Dead's longtime publicist, Dennis McNally, not me. He has more hair than I do. [via Evan Marcus-Rotman]
these shots seem to be the #gratefuldead at the matrix, late november/early december 1966, the same nights as the widely circulated early tapes. adore the shot of bill kreutzmann apparently chillin' while bob weir soundchecks.

how 'bout that? the new "san francisco sounds" documentary seems to have yielded a handful of cool never-seen early #gratefuldead images, lovingly screengrabbed by some industrious dead freaks.
If there’s ever been anything to make me believe in a higher power, and that higher power communicates through music, it’s that both the Grateful Dead and The Velvet Underground started out as the Warlocks.
Sure, not crazy for bands in the 60s to come up with that name, but these two bands specifically, on the east and west coast, simultaneously?
It’s some kind of intervention, divine or governmental. #VU #GratefulDead

50 years ago tonight, the #gratefuldead at nassau coliseum, a musically delicious saturday night, though the #LongIsland cops make for miserable conditions & the dead don’t return to the venue for a half-dozen years. (night 3 canceled earlier in the week, very likely due to lack of sales.) early fall ’73, show #2, now dave’s picks 38. soundboard: https://archive.org/details/gd1973-09-08.sbd.goodbear.78349.flac16 [1/5]
